Ardagh Glass Packaging receives ENERGY STAR plant certification for Madera facility

US – Ardagh Glass Packaging – North America (AGP – NA) has been awarded an ENERGY STAR plant certification for its glassmaking facility in Madera. Calif., from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The certification has been awarded by the US Environmental Protection Agency for superior energy performance.

Energy Star certified buildings and plants are verified to perform in the top 25% of buildings nationwide, based on weather-normalized source energy use that considers occupancy, hours of operation and other key metrics.

On average, certified buildings and plants use 35% less energy, cause 35% fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and are less expensive to operate than their peers, all without sacrifices in performance or comfort.

AGP – NA’s Madera glassmaking facility manufactures glass containers for the US wine market, producing around one million containers a day.

Ardagh has improved the site’s energy performance by upgrading and optimizing furnaces, using recycled glass and installing energy-efficient lighting fixtures.

The facility meets the EPA’s energy efficiency performance levels and is claimed to be in the top 25% of similar facilities across the US for energy efficiency.

Ardagh Glass Packaging chief sustainability officer Alex Winters said: “Ardagh Glass Packaging is honored to earn the Energy Star plant certification at our Madera, California facility for the ninth consecutive year.

“Thanks to the dedicated Ardagh employees for their commitment to continued energy savings, making Ardagh an environmental leader in the packaging industry.”

Cindy Jacobs, Chief of the ENERGY STAR Commercial & Industrial Branch added: “Improving the energy performance of our nation’s manufacturing plants is critical to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“EPA applauds companies that make a commitment to energy efficiency, demonstrated by achieving ENERGY STAR certification for their facilities.”

Since 2010, the company has received 51 ENERGY STAR plant and building certifications across ten of its facilities.

AGP – NA remains the only U.S., glass container manufacturer to earn this recognition for multiple facilities over multiple years.

Early this year, the company’s Winchester, Ind., glass manufacturing facility achieved FSSC 22000 Food Safety System Certification.

The FSSC 22000 Food Safety System Certification provides a framework for effectively managing an organization’s food safety responsibilities.

Fully recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), FSSC 22000 demonstrates that a company has a robust Food Safety Management System in place.
