An ESP is a sophisticated device designed to filter particulate matter from gases, effectively removing dust and smoke before their release into the atmosphere. This crucial upgrade enables Ardagh to meet stringent emissions standards.

The installation of the Wadeville ESP, completed in late 2023, represented a significant investment exceeding R100 million (US$5.38m). This investment underscores the company’s commitment to maintaining air quality at world standards.

Wadeville joins a growing list of Ardagh facilities in South Africa equipped with ESP technology, including the Bellville site in the Western Cape and two of the three furnaces at the Nigel facility.

The company is extending this initiative with plans to install ESPs at the remaining furnace in Nigel and its Clayville facility in Gauteng.

These upgrades ensure that all Ardagh furnaces comply with minimum emission standards by April 1, 2025.

CEO Paul Curnow elaborated on the company’s broader environmental strategy: “We remain focused on continuous improvement in all aspects of our business to demonstrate that we make packaging for good.

“In addition to adopting the latest technologies, our goals include using less virgin raw materials and increasing the recycled glass content in our products.

“We are also working to lightweight our containers, which further helps reduce emissions and lower energy consumption, aligning with our sustainability targets.”

Meanwhile, Ardagh Glass Packaging (AGP)-North America recently cemented a local supply agreement for glass beer bottles with Stevens Point Brewery, establishing a significant partnership between the two entities.

This collaboration links Stevens Point Brewery with AGP-North America’s glass manufacturing plant in Burlington, Wisconsin, US, strategically aligning with its commitment to sourcing local products and integrating sustainable practices into its operations.

Brian Elza, the purchasing director at Stevens Point Brewery, emphasized the brewery’s extensive distribution network, which spans over 30 states and delivers 1.7 million cases annually of various beverages, half of which are in glass bottles.

Elza highlighted the energy efficiency and support for the state economy achieved through sourcing glass closer to home, emphasizing that this partnership resonates deeply with the brewery’s values.

Ardagh Group asserted that local collaboration reduces emissions and bolsters Wisconsin’s local economies and communities.
