Clariant explores innovative PFAS-free polymer processing aids for more sustainable polyolefin extrusion

This innovative solution addresses the industry’s growing demand for more sustainable alternatives to traditional fluoropolymer-based processing aids without compromising performance.

Switzerland – Clariant has announced the launch of its new AddWorks PPA product line, a new generation of PFAS-free polymer processing aids explicitly designed for polyolefin extrusion applications.

This innovative solution addresses the industry’s growing demand for more sustainable alternatives to traditional fluoropolymer-based processing aids without compromising performance.

The new generation targets the Greater China and Southeast Asia Pacific (SEAP) regions. It includes AddWorks PPA 101 FG, primarily focused on EMEA, Americas, and SEAP markets, as well as AddWorks PPA 122 G.

Both AddWorks PPA offer manufacturers a convenient solution, readily available in the market, as regulatory restrictions on PFAS substances continue to tighten worldwide.

“Our new AddWorks PPA product line represents a significant breakthrough in sustainable polymer processing,” said Diederik Goyvaerts, Global Business Development Manager for Polymer Solutions at Clariant.

“By developing PFAS-free alternatives that match or exceed the performance of traditional processing aids, we’re helping our customers stay ahead of regulatory changes while maintaining the high-quality standards their end-users expect.”

Not only are the innovative formulations completely free of per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), but they are also entirely free of inorganic, silicone, or polysiloxane materials.

The innovative formulations address a critical need in the packaging industry, ensuring broad regulatory compliance.

Furthermore, the innovative solution aligns with the industry’s sustainability goal as it supports recyclability needs under the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). By reducing the use of harmful substances and promoting recyclability, these aids make a significant contribution to the industry’s sustainability efforts.

It is expected that manufacturers using the new AddWorks PPA solutions will have significant improvements in processing.

As the products undergo essential downstream converting processes, such as enhanced extrusion efficiency, they exhibit stable optical and mechanical properties without adversely affecting dyne level, sealability, or the coefficient of friction. This ensures that the aids maintain product quality throughout the manufacturing process.

AddWorks PPA 101 FG has a 100% active fine-grain formulation that can be conveniently added through host resin, masterbatch, or concentrate.

AddWorks PPA 122 G is available in a user-friendly masterbatch form, allowing for easy handling and requiring the exact dosage as conventional polymer processing aid masterbatches, making it simple for manufacturers to switch.

The new processing aids are ideal for a wide range of applications, including polyethylene blown and cast film extrusion processes due to their adaptability.

These additives will particularly benefit Film converters from the improved surface quality and processing.

Through this innovation, Clariant reinforces its unwavering commitment to developing more sustainable solutions to address both performance needs and regulatory challenges.

Clariant’s proactive approach provides customers with future-proof solutions that maintain operational excellence while advancing sustainability goals.

The growing consumer and brand priorities for health, transparency, and sustainability align with Clariant’s commitment to developing solutions.

Clariant offers innovative ingredients and materials that help brands meet evolving market demand for products that promote well-being and minimise environmental impact, as well as regulatory requirements.
