UK – The International Aluminium Institute (IAI) is endorsing a new endeavor that pledges to openly track and publicly showcase the commitment and advancements in greenhouse gas reduction by all its member corporations.
Launched at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28) in Dubai, this initiative has garnered support from major aluminium producers, reflecting the sector’s ongoing efforts to diminish its greenhouse gas emissions.
The signatories embracing this initiative include prominent names such as Aluminerie Alouette, Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), Alcoa Corporation, Alumina, Companhia Brasileira de Alumínio (CBA), Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), Hindalco Industries, Norsk Hydro, Mitsubishi Corporation, Rio Tinto Aluminium, Rusal, Sohar Aluminium, and South32.
The IAI has committed to track and report the ambition and progress of its member companies concerning greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions.
Furthermore, the association pledges to publicly disclose the total global GHG emissions of the aluminium industry annually.
The implementation of new equipment and technology, including the use of aluminium scrap as a feedstock, stands as a crucial facet emphasized by the association.
This initiative outlines the goal of setting a long-term GHG emission reduction target, possibly by 2024, and preferably aiming for a net zero target by 2050. An interim GHG emission reduction target, expected by 2030, is also under consideration as per the IAI.
Facilities endorsing this initiative will adopt the “IAI Good Practice for Calculation of Primary Aluminium Carbon Footprint Methodology” and the “IAI Guidelines on Transparency – Aluminium Scrap” as calculation benchmarks.
IAI Secretary General Miles Prosser stresses the aluminium industry’s commitment to swiftly reduce GHG emissions, acknowledging that substantial investment and action are essential to meet global objectives.
Satish Pai, Managing Director of Hindalco Industries and chair of the IAI board, hails recycling as a critical component in the industry’s sustainable approach.
Reflecting on the growing importance of aluminium in achieving a low-carbon world, Alcoa President and CEO Bill Oplinger underscore Alcoa’s ambition to attain net-zero emissions by 2050.
Hilde Merete Aasheim, CEO of Norsk Hydro, reaffirms Hydro’s dedication to aggressive GHG emission reduction targets and support for the IAI initiative for an industry-wide decarbonization pathway, citing the company’s strides toward meeting these goals.
