PORTUGAL – Infineon Technologies has unveiled a strategic partnership with Amkor Technology, Inc., a leading provider of semiconductor packaging and test services, aimed at enhancing Infineon’s outsourced backend manufacturing capabilities in Europe.
The collaboration entails the establishment of a dedicated packaging and test center at Amkor’s manufacturing site in Porto, Portugal, with operations scheduled to commence in the first half of 2025.
This long-term agreement signifies a significant step forward in their partnership, moving beyond the traditional Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) business model.
As part of the partnership, Amkor will enhance its facilities in Porto to accommodate the new production line and provide dedicated clean room space.
Infineon, on the other hand, will deploy an onsite engineering and development team to offer crucial support.
This collaboration aims to bolster the resilience of the European semiconductor supply chain, particularly benefiting automotive customers, and will help Infineon balance its manufacturing footprint between in-house and outsourced production capabilities.
Alexander Gorski, Executive Vice President overseeing Infineon’s global Backend Operations, expressed excitement about deepening the partnership with Amkor, highlighting their joint effort to enhance geographical resilience and supply security for customers.
He emphasized the significance of strengthening Europe’s position in semiconductor manufacturing, leveraging Infineon’s longstanding presence in Porto’s semiconductor ecosystem.
Giel Rutten, President and CEO of Amkor, also expressed pride in expanding the partnership with Infineon, highlighting Amkor’s continued investments in the Porto manufacturing site to expand capacity and broaden its advanced packaging and test technology portfolio.
Rutten emphasized that this collaboration represents another milestone for both companies in enhancing supply chain resiliency for advanced products supporting automotive and industrial end markets.
In a related development, Amkor Technology, Inc. and GlobalFoundries (GF), a prominent semiconductor manufacturer, have commenced a strategic partnership in Europe with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Amkor’s Porto facility.
This collaboration, initiated in January 2024, involves the transfer of semiconductor wafer production tools from GF’s Dresden site to Amkor’s Porto plant, establishing a comprehensive EU supply chain from wafer production to OSAT services.
This partnership also redefines the semiconductor manufacturing landscape in Europe, facilitating the establishment of a scalable backend facility in Porto.
The collaboration underscores the shared goal of stabilizing a robust and resilient European automotive supply chain, aligning with the European Union’s objectives of ensuring supply chain stability and delivering next-generation semiconductor solutions.
