Jordan inks landmark deal with Waste Recycling Cooperative Association to turn trash into treasure

Minister Suleiman hailed the transition to this model as a “national priority,” one that holds the key to unlocking both ecological balance and economic opportunity.

JORDAN – The Ministry of Environment has signed a pivotal agreement with a recycling cooperative, launching a nationwide drive to transform waste from a problem into a valuable resource.

In a significant stride toward a greener future, Jordan’s Ministry of Environment has officially joined forces with the Waste Recycling Cooperative Association.

The Memorandum of Understanding, formalised by Minister Ayman Suleiman and Association Chairman Hussein Abu Jabal in the presence of senior officials, activates a core pillar of the Kingdom’s strategy to combat indiscriminate dumping and champion environmental cleanliness.

This partnership represents a unified commitment to reimagining waste management for the benefit of both people and the planet.

Cultivating a Culture of Circularity

At the heart of this initiative lies the circular economy, an economic model focused on eliminating waste through the continual use of resources.

Minister Suleiman hailed the transition to this model as a “national priority,” one that holds the key to unlocking both ecological balance and economic opportunity.

By championing source-based waste sorting of materials like paper, plastic, and metal, the programme aims to dramatically cut the mountain of waste currently sent to landfills, which studies show receives over 90 percent of the country’s refuse.

This strategy preserves natural resources and fosters a culture where waste is not an endpoint, but a valuable beginning.

Empowering Communities Through Practical Action

Turning this vision into reality requires grassroots effort, and the Cooperative Association is leading the practical rollout across the Kingdom.

Under the agreement, they will distribute specialised sorting containers to schools, businesses, and community institutions, making participation simple and accessible for citizens.

Hussein Abu Jabal affirmed the association’s commitment to monitoring the entire chain, from collection and transportation to final recycling, ensuring every step is handled with integrity and sustainability.

As part of this accountability, they will provide the ministry with periodic reports detailing recycled quantities and outlining future development plans, ensuring complete transparency.

Forging a Greener, More Prosperous Jordan

The benefits of this collaboration extend far beyond cleaner streets and reduced landfill waste. Minister Suleiman envisions this as a catalyst for quality job creation and increased innovation in waste management technologies.

The ministry, he stated, will provide the necessary technical and awareness support, guiding these joint programmes toward the ambitious goals set by the National Cleanliness Strategy.

It is a holistic approach that promises to protect the environment while building a more resilient and prosperous economy, creating a sustainable legacy for generations to come.
