UGANDA – The Ugandan government has partnered with the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC) to address the country’s growing waste management issues by decommissioning the 39-acre Kiteezi Landfill in Wakiso District near Kampala.
The site, once closed, will be transformed into an ecological recreational facility.
JGC plans to invest in integrated composting and recycling systems and transfer stations, providing a comprehensive waste treatment solution for the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
These systems will improve environmental sanitation and produce organic compost for agricultural use. Recovered plastics will be repurposed as raw materials for a new bin manufacturing facility.
This initiative is expected to create over 2,000 jobs for Ugandans, addressing both environmental and economic concerns.
The project follows a tragic waste slide on August 10, 2024, that claimed 23 lives and caused significant property damage.
JGC, a highly diversified holdings company with extensive experience across Africa and Asia, is well-positioned to execute this project.
With numerous subsidiaries and a strong track record in waste management, JGC brings the necessary expertise to Uganda.
During the project handover ceremony, which was attended by notable figures such as Kampala Minister Joseph Kyofatogabye and JGC Executive Chairman Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, the Minister underscored the importance of the partnership.
He emphasized that the initiative, approved by the Ugandan cabinet, is a crucial step toward improving waste management and promoting eco-friendly practices in the country.
Kyofatogabye highlighted the plan to reduce the waste mass at Kiteezi by stabilizing slopes and capping the landfill. He praised JGC’s experience and resources, noting that the company was chosen for its cost-effective and easily implementable solutions.
Expressed optimistic about the project, Dr. Agyepong noted that JGC’s extensive expertise in waste management would greatly benefit Uganda.
He highlighted that Uganda’s waste, with 80% organic content, presents a unique opportunity to convert waste into organic fertilizers.
Earlier this year, JGC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Lagos State Government in Nigeria to offer recycling, treatment, and waste processing solutions.
Under this agreement, JGC will leverage its advanced technology and expertise to assist Lagos in its waste management efforts, further expanding its impact across Africa.
JGC’s commitment to sustainability and innovation is evident in its comprehensive waste management strategies, ensuring that Uganda and other African nations benefit from eco-friendly solutions to waste challenges.
