Klöckner Pentaplast earns ISCC Plus Certification Medical Device Packaging Films

GERMANY – Plastic packaging products manufacturer, Klöckner Pentaplast (kp) has received ISCC Plus certification through the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) at three of its manufacturing facilities in North America and Europe.

This certification allows kp to utilize any chemically recycled raw material using mass balance and will directly support its use of chemically recycled polymers.

Successful ISCC Plus certification has been achieved at kp’s manufacturing sites in Montabaur, Germany, and both Gordonsville and Rural Retreat, Virginia, USA.

The certifications are integral and will allow kp to utilize chemically recycled polymers, such as Eastman’s medical grade Eastar Renew resin in the production of select Pentamed® Medical Device films.

Tom Priewe, kp product manager for medical device films said: “By utilizing chemically recycled polymers like Renew for our medical device films, we are not only reducing the burden on virgin raw materials, we are also supporting the successful diversion of waste that would otherwise be landfilled or incinerated.

“Kp is thoroughly committed to expanding its medical device film presence globally by offering new, novel products to the market.”

Kirstin Hedin, vice president of product line management and marketing added: “Our commitment to sustainability focuses on incorporating more recycled content into our recipes along with designing products for recyclability.

“We will continue to develop solutions that drive circularity by collaborating with key supplier partners.”

This comes at a time when the global medical packaging market, worth US$133.3 billion in 2023 is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.2% by 2026, according to GlobalData.

Increasing demand for environmentally friendly practices has resulted in the introduction of recycled content in the pharmaceutical packaging value chain, allowing companies such as kp to take advantage of the market opportunities.

Klöckner Pentaplast recently launched a multi-layer recyclable vacuum film in collaboration with materials science company Dow, demonstrating the commercial opportunities for this packaging type.

The product uses Dow‘s Fusabond technology, allowing the film to be recyclable without compromising performance and aesthetics.

The product has high tensile strength and is suitable for packaging bone-in fresh meat and poultry cuts. Combined with its hermetical seal, the films offer food protection and safety throughout the supply chain.
