Koehler Paper partners with Pack&Satt for sustainable packaging solutions

GERMANY – Koehler Paper, a subsidiary of Koehler Group, has introduced an innovative paper-based packaging solution for pack&satt, a ready-to-eat (RTE) meal provider.

This marks the first time Koehler has used its NexPlus Advanced flexible packaging paper in a commercial food packaging application.

The NexPlus Advanced paper provides excellent protection for pack&satt’s “einpott” RTE meals, effectively blocking oxygen, mineral oil, and grease.

According to Alexander Rauer, head of business development for Koehler’s flexible packaging division, the primary focus during development was to ensure recyclability while maintaining high product protection standards.

“The result is a packaging paper that can be conventionally recycled and reused multiple times,” Rauer explained.

pack&satt, known for its RTE meals in Tomate Linse, Curry Linse, and Rote Bete Kartoffel flavors, initially packaged its products in returnable glass jars.

However, customer feedback and an internal review prompted the company to explore more sustainable alternatives.

According to Sophie Gnest, founder of pack&satt, customers frequently mentioned that if they had an electric kettle, they likely had bowls or cups available, making the glass jars unnecessary.

“Switching from glass to paper significantly improves our environmental footprint. When we discovered Koehler’s solution, we knew it was the right fit for our needs,” Gnest said.

Expanding the reach of sustainable packaging

Koehler Paper’s innovative solutions are gaining traction beyond RTE meals. Earlier this month, Italian organic pasta brand IRIS Bio became the first company to use NexPlus Seal Pure, another flexible packaging paper from Koehler, for its pasta products.

NexPlus Seal Pure is a heat-sealable paper designed to extend shelf life and protect contents while offering superior strength for standard packaging machines.

Mauro Moretti, sales manager for Koehler Italia, highlighted the environmental benefits of this transition.

“With Koehler NexPlus Seal Pure, we provide a packaging solution with a significantly reduced carbon footprint compared to conventional plastic. Additionally, its recyclability helps conserve valuable resources,” Moretti noted.

By continuously developing sustainable alternatives, Koehler Paper is reinforcing its commitment to environmentally responsible packaging solutions across various food segments.
