SWEDEN – Paper and packaging company, Mondi has announced plans to upgrade its Dynäs pulp and paper mill in Sweden.

The modernization program will increase efficiency and further improve the overall environmental performance of the mill, positioning it well to continue meeting customer demand for sustainable paper and paper-based packaging solutions.

The Dynäs mill produces high-quality sack and speciality kraft papers, used for a variety of paper-based packaging solutions for industrial and consumer industries, and is an important part of Mondi’s Flexible Packaging business.

The project includes installing and upgrading machinery and equipment such as a new cooking plant and bark boiler, which will improve the mill’s energy efficiency.

Upgrades will further reduce air and water emissions, resulting in better wood utilization at the mill.

Roman Senecky, COO of Mondi Kraft Paper, says: “The modernization program at Dynäs represents a significant investment in the future of this well-established mill.

“By producing sustainable sack and speciality kraft paper, we continue contributing to our MAP2030 goals and meeting customer demand with innovative solutions such as Advantage StretchWrap and Advantage MF EcoComp. The mill supplies paper across Europe and plays an important role in the local community.”

The Swedish Land and Environmental Court (Mark-och Miljödomstolen) approved Mondi’s works application in March 2023. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Earlier, Mondi created a new paperbag solution called Protector Bag ExpandForm, which comes with an expandable feature to rollpack mattresses.

According to the company, Protector Bag ExpandForm replaces the plastic packaging that is currently used with a reusable and flexible alternative.

The paperbag solution can also be customized and expanded to various sizes while securing the mattress.

Made with Mondi’s Kraft paper, the paperbag packaging can be recycled, thus contributing to a circular economy. As it is made from renewable materials, the packaging is easy to dispose of and recycle in currently available paper waste streams.

As well as adapting easily to existing packaging equipment, it is reported that the bag is puncture resistant and compatible with printing, providing companies with branding opportunities.

“Consumers are actively seeking packaging that is responsibly sourced and easy to recycle,” explains Fabio Barbieri, sales director Paper Bags at Mondi.

“This new solution ticks both boxes: it is easier to open and to dispose compared to large rolls of plastic and avoidable packaging used previously.”
