CANADA – Nespresso Canada has partnered with Circular Materials to introduce its Green Bag recycling program in Ontario, starting with the City of London.
The Green Bag recycling program, launched in 2016, enables residents to recycle Nespresso capsules at home by collecting used aluminum capsules in a designated green bag and placing it in their recycling bin.
This initiative, already established in over 1,000 communities across Canada, makes Ontario the sixth province to join the program, following Quebec, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.
Nestlé Canada, a founding member of Circular Materials, played a crucial role in bringing the Green Bag recycling program to London.
At Miller Waste Systems in London, a sorting center and partner of Circular Materials, the green bags are separated and sent to a Nespresso recycling partner.
The capsules undergo a mechanical process to separate the coffee grounds from the aluminum. The aluminum is then recycled, and the coffee grounds are turned into compost, all at no extra cost to consumers or the municipality.
“Implementing the Green Bag program in Ontario has been a priority for Nespresso for years now – we are proud that this additional solution is brought to London, Ontario,” said Carlos Oyanguren, president of Nespresso Canada.
“For over a decade, Nespresso has played a key role in reducing residual materials in Canada by implementing innovative recycling solutions.
“We are confident that this collaboration with Circular Materials in Ontario will help achieve our ambitious recycling targets, and we look forward to expanding this solution to other municipalities.”
Previously, Nespresso Club members in London used the Red Bag system, requiring them to drop off their capsules at Canada Post locations.
With the Green Bag program, members can now conveniently place their capsules directly in their blue recycling bin.
Earlier this year, Nespresso Canada expanded its Green Bag recycling solution to all communities in Prince Edward Island.
The program, active in over 1,000 communities nationwide, provides Nespresso users with a green bag to collect their used capsules.
Once full, the bag can be placed in the user’s household recycling system, where it will be directed to a sorting center to separate the coffee grounds from the aluminum for recycling. The coffee grounds are then used as high-quality compost for local farms.
Frédéric Pasquier, vice-president of Marketing and Corporate Communications at Nespresso Canada, said, “We are proud to extend access to the Green Bag solution to new residents, this time in Prince Edward Island, so they can simply and effectively give a second life to the coffee capsules they enjoy every day. We are continuing our efforts to offer this service to new communities shortly.”
