Nestle Mexico promotes circular economy through 94% recyclable plastics

This stride shows efforts moving closer to the global Nestle Group’s goal of achieving 95% recyclability by the end of 2025.

MEXICO – Nestle Mexico has designed approximately 94% of its plastic packaging to be recyclable as part of its ongoing environmental strategy.

This stride shows efforts moving closer to the global Nestle Group’s goal of achieving 95% recyclability by the end of 2025.

The advancement strategy aims to redesign packaging, reduce material use, promote reuse, and facilitate the recovery of post-consumer waste to reintroduce it into the production system.

This transition is a significant step towards sustainability.

Through this transition, Nestle Mexico’s unwavering commitment to a circular economy for plastics is underscored by its emphasis on minimising the use of virgin materials through strategies such as reuse and recycling.

In the last five years, Nestle has been proactive in recovering over 116,000 tons of plastic waste, including those without viable recycling chains.

These waste neutralisation strategy efforts ensure plastics are reused rather than ending up in landfills or water bodies.

“The recovery and management of these materials allows us to advance our neutralisation strategy, which ensures material and energy recovery,” remarked Carlos Becerra, Shared Value Creation Manager, Nestle Mexico.

To achieve sustainable packaging, Nestle’s strategic approach focuses on developing innovative solutions and investing in recycling infrastructure.

Some of the strategies employed by Nestle include investments in material adaptation to reduce weight and complexity, as well as consumer education campaigns on proper waste separation and disposal.

In collaboration with organisations such as ECOCE and ANIPAC, Nestle anticipates strengthening collection and recycling systems nationwide, with initiatives cutting across both urban and rural areas.

Additionally, Nestle urges broad partnerships with private sector actors, government authorities and civil society to address environmental challenges.

The company highlights that successful waste management and sustainable product design require collective responsibility rather than individual efforts.

Brands like Nescafé, Nespresso, and Purina have implemented initiatives to collect consumer-used materials, ensuring their reuse and supporting responsible production and consumption models.

Notably, Nestle Mexico has established itself as a leader in corporate sustainability, presenting an adaptable model for responsible plastic management.
