INDIA – Global consumer packaged goods company, PepsiCo India has revealed plans to launch India’s first-ever 100% rPET (recycled plastic) bottles in the Carbonated Beverage category.

“This launch is part of PepsiCo India’s mission to build a positive value chain through a circular, inclusive economy where packaging never becomes waste,” the company said in a statement.
Speaking on the announcement, George Kovoor, senior vice president, Beverages and Sustainability at PepsiCo India said: “We are encouraged by the measures taken by the Government to promote a circular economy in India.
“We are proud to launch the 100% rPET bottles of Pepsi Black. This an important milestone in our sustainability journey, backed by our intent to create a positive value chain and this launch is yet another step in that direction.
“We shall learn and evolve as we continue our endeavors to build a robust ecosystem while expanding the use of recycled content in our packaging.”
The Pepsi Black rPET bottles are manufactured in India in partnership with Srichakra Polyplast (India) Private Limited with the bottling partner, Varun Beverages.
Driven by its ‘Winning with pep+’ philosophy, the company recognizes the importance of taking comprehensive efforts to reduce, recycle and re-invent its packaging.
In its efforts to drive recyclability and sustainability, PepsiCo in May, partnered with UEFA to feature reusable packaging in this year’s Champions League finals.
At both the men’s and women’s Champions League finals, all food and beverage packaging supplied was completely recyclable, with the men’s final including 220 recycling bins for diligent waste sorting post-event.
The Women’s Champions League Final was the first to implement returnable packaging for food and drinks.
In Istanbul, PepsiCo partnered with TURN, a scalable reuse system, to house 48,000 smart cups and bin operations at Champion’s Festival sampling stands.
PepsiCo chief sustainability officer Archana Jagannathan at the time said: “PepsiCo is continuously aiming to use its reach and influence to change the way society makes, uses and disposes of packaging.”
UEFA social and environmental sustainability director Michele Uva added: “UEFA is delighted to continue the collaboration with PepsiCo to deploy circular economy practices across these two important Finals.”
