QATAR – The Qatari Ministry of Municipality announced that it has successfully provided recycling containers to approximately 80% of households in Doha, marking a substantial step forward in the country’s sustainability efforts.
As part of the initiative, the Ministry introduced blue bins for households to dispose of recyclable materials such as plastic, glass, paper, and metal.
According to the Ministry, these bins allow residents to separate recyclable waste from organic waste, which continues to be collected in grey bins.
The recyclable waste is then collected and transported to Qatar’s dedicated recycling hub located in Al Afjah, Mesaieed.
The recycling hub in Mesaieed is at the heart of Qatar’s efforts to boost its recycling capacity. As of 2023, the industrial area housed 11 operational factories dedicated to recycling various materials, with seven more factories nearing launch and an additional 12 under construction.
The hub is poised to become a major center for recycling in the region, with 50 plots of land allocated to construct additional recycling facilities.
These facilities will process a wide range of materials, including plastic, paper, wood, oil, medical waste, and organic waste.
Eng. Hamad Jassim Al Bahr, Director of the Waste Recycling and Treatment Department, emphasized the initiative’s importance, stating, “We have allocated significant resources to develop the recycling infrastructure in Al Afjah. This is a crucial step in our efforts to reduce waste and promote sustainability in Qatar.”
He also highlighted the Ministry’s ongoing campaign to educate households, companies, factories, and institutions about recycling and waste reduction.
The 80% milestone achievement in Doha is part of Qatar’s broader waste sorting at source program, which is initially being implemented in the capital city.
The program is set to expand to other municipalities, including Umm Salal, Al Daayen, Al Khor, and Al Shamal, by 2026. By 2027, the initiative will also be rolled out in Al Rayan, Al Wakra, and Al Sheehaniya, significantly increasing recycling rates across the country.
This initiative is a key component of Qatar’s long-term strategy to promote sustainability, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. Qatar lays the groundwork for a more sustainable future by enhancing waste management practices and boosting recycling efforts.
