Schreiner MediPharm expands needle-trap portfolio for large-volume syringes amid biologics growth

The company design all products and services application-specific and customized for the Pharmaceutical Industry, Medical Technology and Clinical Trials.

GERMANY – Schreiner MediPharm has expanded its Needle-Trap needle protection system to support larger syringe formats of 2.25 ml, 3 ml, and 5 ml, addressing soaring demand for biologics and biosimilars requiring higher fill volumes and the ability to handle increasingly viscous formulations.

The enhancement comes as pharmaceutical manufacturers confront new primary packaging challenges linked to the rise of complex molecules and injectable specialty therapies.

The updated Needle-Trap maintains the compact, integrated-label design that distinguishes the system from conventional needle safety mechanisms and autoinjectors—allowing pharmaceutical companies to reduce material consumption, overall system costs, and associated CO₂ emissions.

Because the label-based safety device is processed using standard dispensing equipment, manufacturers can scale production without adjusting existing lines or secondary packaging formats.

A Schreiner MediPharm spokesperson noted that “highly viscous active ingredients with larger molecular structures increasingly require the utilization of large-volume syringes,” underscoring the need for adaptable, processing-efficient solutions.

The company conducted extensive testing to ensure smooth integration with manufacturers’ labeling equipment, confirming reliable performance during high-speed application.

The expanded system offers advantages across the supply chain, including reduced storage, transport, and cooling requirements compared to bulkier mechanical protection systems, an important benefit as the volume of specialty injectables continues to rise globally.

The Needle-Trap expansion follows Schreiner MediPharm’s August collaboration with Bluesight, which introduced advanced RFID-Labels compatible with the widely adopted KitCheck Scanning Stations used in 900 North American hospitals.

Designed for high-speed labeling and durability, the RFID labels capture batch numbers, expiration dates, and tamper-evidence indicators, improving medication traceability and reducing errors in clinical workflows.

These labels adhere securely to small-radius containers such as vials and syringes and can incorporate hangers, removable documentation segments, and security seals.

“Standardized RFID labeling improves workflow and reduces medication errors, enhancing patient safety,” said senior product manager Sebastian Münscher.

In addition to the RFID initiative, Schreiner MediPharm recently launched a Smart Syringe Box tailored for clinical trials.

Equipped with digital tracking and temperature monitoring, the system provides accurate data capture throughout handling and administration phases, an increasingly critical requirement for biologic trial protocols.

With the expansion of Needle-Trap and continued investment in smart labeling and connected packaging, Schreiner MediPharm is positioning itself as a leading solutions provider for safety-critical, digitally enabled pharmaceutical packaging in an evolving biologics-driven market.
