GERMANY – Siegwerk, a leading provider of printing inks and coatings for packaging and labels, has unveiled an innovative nitrocellulose (NC)-free toolbox aimed at advancing sustainable and recyclable flexible packaging.
The NC-free toolbox is designed to help customers meet stringent recycling criteria while maintaining high-performance standards for polyolefin (PO) solutions.
By integrating Siegwerk’s existing NC-free ink portfolio with new developments, the toolbox supports both lamination and surface applications in gravure and flexographic printing.
Initially rolled out across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, the toolbox facilitates the creation of recyclable flexible packaging for diverse application segments.
It offers a comprehensive range of colors and overprint varnishes for gravure and flexo printing, complying with current recycling guidelines. These solutions are available as ready-to-use inks or as a masterbatch system.
A cornerstone of this offering is Siegwerk’s proprietary polyurethane resin technology, which replaces NC. While NC-based inks are valued for their resistance, fast drying, and excellent adhesion, they hinder material recycling.
To address this, regulations from organizations like RecyClass and Germany’s minimum standard have restricted NC content in PO-based packaging structures.
The NC-free toolbox represents a significant leap toward circular packaging designs that deliver high-quality recyclate and align with the latest Design for Recycling guidelines.
Expanding circular solutions
Siegwerk’s commitment to sustainable packaging extends beyond inks. Last December, the company expanded its CIRKIT product range, introducing functional coatings that enhance packaging recyclability and reusability.
These coatings retain essential properties like barriers and sealability while supporting circular economy principles.
To further its sustainability goals, Siegwerk has established a global business unit dedicated to Circular Economy Coatings.
This initiative, detailed in its latest Sustainability Report, underscores the company’s focus on sustainability, human rights, ethical supply chain management, and carbon emissions reduction.
Key milestones include the appointment of a human rights officer, reflecting Siegwerk’s dedication to ethical practices and the well-being of its workforce.
The company has also launched a comprehensive Supplier Sustainability Program, aimed at promoting sustainable procurement and ensuring responsible sourcing throughout its supply chain.
Furthermore, Siegwerk introduced a Business Partner Code of Conduct, setting clear expectations for ethical practices among its partners.
Siegwerk also collaborated with TÜV SÜD Industrie Service on a carbon audit, validating its Corporate and Product Carbon Footprints.
The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality for scope one and scope two emissions by 2025, with targets endorsed by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
Siegwerk’s NC-free toolbox and strategic initiatives mark a significant advancement in the transition to sustainable packaging solutions.
By prioritizing recyclability, reducing carbon footprints, and adhering to ethical standards, the company is paving the way for a more circular and environmentally friendly packaging industry.
