UK – Sonoco has launched fully recyclable packaging for a range of natural, plant-based food products under the Marigold Health Foods brand in the UK.

This user-friendly solution allows consumers to easily recycle the packaging via curbside collection after consumption, supporting environmental sustainability.

The new packaging design’s core is the EnviroCan paper bottom, which provides essential oxygen and moisture barriers to ensure food safety and extend shelf life.

Compared to traditional rigid packaging, Marigold’s new packaging offers a significantly lower environmental footprint.

It is primarily made from sustainably sourced paperboard, along with secondary materials like an aluminum seal and a low-density polyethylene (PE) lid.

With over a 20% reduction in packaging weight, the brand has also reduced its transport fuel consumption.

The development of this next-generation packaging took two years. Previously, Marigold’s packaging consisted of a cardboard body with a metal base, which posed recycling challenges.

Marigold has replaced the metal end with Sonoco’s paper-based alternative by investing in new machinery, creating an all-paper body and base.

The can-body comprises 95% paper, with 60% coming from post-consumer recycled fiber. The remaining 5% is an inner liner that protects the product.

This new packaging is already available in most UK supermarkets and features the OPRL recycling logo, guiding consumers on how to properly recycle it. Sonoco emphasizes that this update complies with key UK and European packaging and recycling regulations.

Marigold’s plant-based range includes products like nutritional yeast (Engevita), bouillon, gravy, stock cubes, sauces, and plant-based meat and fish alternatives.

In a similar move toward innovation, Kellanova (formerly Kellogg) announced the introduction of Pringles Mingles, marking the snack brand’s first venture into bagged snacks in over 15 years.

Known for their iconic cylindrical containers, Pringles Mingles brings a new twist to the brand’s offering.

The new snack bags feature the recognizable “Mr. P” logo and offer exciting flavor combinations such as Cheddar and Sour Cream, Sharp White Cheddar and Ranch, and Dill Pickle and Ranch.

Pringles Mingles will hit US store shelves in October 2024, sparking anticipation among loyal customers.

This product launch aligns with Kellanova’s broader sustainability efforts. The company continues to lead with popular snack brands like Cheez-It, Pop-Tarts, Kellogg’s Rice Krispies Treats, and MorningStar Farms, all of which are embracing eco-friendly practices.
