BELGIUM – US-based cold chain packaging provider Sonoco ThermoSafe has announced the expansion of its Orion Rental packaging program in Europe, adding a reclamation service station in Brussels.
The company has selected CEVA Logistics, a logistics partner to more than 500 healthcare and life science companies in Brussels, Belgium, as the location for the station.
Sonoco said that CEVA Logistics has been chosen due to its proximity to existing biopharmaceutical customers, prospects and other western European countries.
The BRU Orion Rental Station will carry out the essential cleaning, refurbishing, and reclamation procedures to put Orion boxes back into circulation in ‘like new’ quality, fit-for medical supplies.
CEVA Logistics healthcare business development contract logistics head Bas van Breugel said: “Our healthcare logistics services are designed for better patient outcomes.
“By storing, refurbishing and pre-conditioning the Orion packaging at the Ceva premises, we provide pharmaceutical companies with the opportunity to save on warehouse space and operational tasks—without compromising the integrity of their shipments. At Ceva , we expertly handle reusable packaging for our good practice (GxP) customers.”
The Orion Rental Programme offers reusable package packaging for medical, pharmaceutical, and other temperature-sensitive businesses to help achieve sustainability goals.
The pharmaceutical firm receives the temperature assurance boxes Just-in-Time (JIT) from an Orion Rental Station so they may distribute their medications to their clients, who are primarily clinical locations, healthcare/distribution facilities, and now directly to patients.
The program offers the highest level of temperature assurance packaging, technology, and customer service that supports all reusable packaging-related activities, such as forecasting and buying.
In addition, customers also benefit from time-saving self-serving tools such as an online ordering portal that provides visibility from orders to reports.
Sonoco ThermoSafe business development director & Orion product manager Andrew Heholt said: “With additional rental stations in Brussels and London, the Orion Rental Programme conveniently services UK, Benelux, and DACH regions which have dense manufacturing and shipping & distribution presence.
“Pharmaceutical companies in these regions can reliably ship their temperature-sensitive products cost-effectively, reduce their operational burdens, while also working toward sustainability goals.”
Last month, Sonoco signed a definitive agreement to acquire Skjern, a privately owned paper manufacturer based in Denmark.
Through this acquisition, Sonoco will expand its customer production capacity and convert operations throughout Europe and neighboring areas.
