TC Transcontinental injects US$60M to commercialize recyclable packaging in US

USA – TC Transcontinental Packaging has announced its plans to invest US$60 million to accelerate the commercialization of recyclable flexible packaging solutions.

This investment will be used by the company to develop high-performance polyethylene films that will offer more heat resistance.

TC Transcontinental Packaging, which is a packaging business of TC Transcontinental, will also install a new film line to produce biaxially oriented polyethylene (BOPE).

The equipment for TC Transcontinental Packaging’s new BOPE film line will be delivered by Brückner Group, a company specializing in the field of film production and technology.

The investment will further support 120,000ft² expansion work at TC Transcontinental Packaging’s facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina, US.

TC Transcontinental’s senior vice-president for R&D, Innovation, Sustainability, and ESG Alex Hayden said: “Our investment in BOPE is a strategic decision that positions us to address sustainability shortcomings in existing offerings.

“This new equipment will advance the commercialization of recyclable film solutions to meet the challenging requirements of our different applications without sacrificing fill speed or performance.”

This investment is already well underway and is expected to be completed by the end of the 2024 fiscal year.

TC Transcontinental president and CEO Thomas Morin said: “This new offering will be a game-changer in TC Transcontinental’s recyclability journey, demonstrating our commitment to distinguish ourselves and gain market share with innovative sustainable solutions for our customers.

“Our offering aligns with our customers’ desire to accelerate speed to market with recyclable products that also protect and preserve their contents throughout their life cycle, in addition to creating a more circular economy for plastic.”

To supply the machinery for the BOPE film line, TC Transcontinental Packaging has chosen Brückner Group, a film manufacturing and technology firm.

The line is said to be a 6.6m wide tenter frame extrusion line and will be installed in the Spartanburg facility.

TC Transcontinental Packaging is engaged in the development of sustainable products via investments in its R&D team and technologies.

The company has developed the vieVERTe sustainable product line that offers benefits like increased shelf life and lowered food waste while offering product protection and reducing environmental impact.

The packaging options offered by vieVERTe include those that are compostable, recyclable, and made from post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials, the packaging company said.
