Tetra Pak unveils comprehensive ‘Approach to Nature’ for biodiversity and water security

SWITZERLAND – Ahead of the United Nations’ International Day of Biodiversity on May 22nd, Tetra Pak has launched its ‘Approach to Nature,’ a comprehensive framework outlining its commitment to halting and reversing nature loss and enhancing water security.

This approach aligns with global targets, including those in the Biodiversity Plan, which aims to halt biodiversity loss and restore nature to benefit all life on Earth.

A report from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) indicates that nature is deteriorating at unprecedented rates, primarily due to human activity.

Global food systems are major drivers of nature loss, with significant impacts threatening global economies, livelihoods, and food security.

Recognizing this complex interdependency, Tetra Pak’s ‘Approach to Nature’ aims to manage the company’s value chain impacts on nature and support ecosystem restoration.

Additionally, it seeks to enhance global water resilience by reducing negative impacts on local water resources and addressing shared water challenges in at-risk basins.

This framework spans the geographies where Tetra Pak operates, involving its business, suppliers, and customers to build a strong foundation for accelerating actions for nature.

Tetra Pak has set 25 ambitious targets aimed at enhancing its environmental sustainability. By 2025, the company aims to ensure that 100% of its raw materials with significant land footprints originate from certified or controlled sources.

Additionally, Tetra Pak plans to have all high water-impact suppliers report on water use and quality by the same year.

By 2030, the company is committed to eradicating waste-to-landfill from its production sites and achieving a 50% reduction in water use in best-practice processing lines compared to 2019.

Gilles Tisserand, Vice President of Climate & Biodiversity at Tetra Pak, commented, “With over half of the world’s GDP heavily reliant on nature, the stakes could not be higher.

“Our ‘Approach to Nature’ reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and builds on our longstanding actions in this domain.

“This is evidenced by our inclusion in the 2023 CDP Forests A List for the eighth consecutive year and achieving an A- in Water Security in our first year of reporting. As other companies join us on this journey, we can help protect and restore nature for future generations.”

In 2022, Tetra Pak signed the Business for Nature coalition’s COP15 business statement, urging governments to adopt the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework’s Target 15.

This target requires large private companies and financial institutions to assess and disclose their biodiversity risks, dependencies, and impacts, promote sustainable consumption, and report on compliance.

Eva Zabey, CEO of Business for Nature, remarked, “Tetra Pak’s ‘Approach to Nature’ marks an important milestone, demonstrating how the corporate world must support the ambitious targets of the Biodiversity Plan.

“We encourage all companies to set a nature strategy—a clear plan for contributing to a nature-positive future by 2030. However, businesses cannot achieve this alone; governments must create the right incentives to accelerate corporate action against nature loss.”
