SWEDEN – Rexcell Tissue & Airlaid has successfully restarted its PM1 machine following a complete drying section rebuild supplied by Toscotec at its Skåpafors mill.
The upgrade has significantly reduced thermal energy consumption while enhancing production capacity.
The project, which aimed to improve energy efficiency, incorporated an upgrade to the press section, the installation of a TT SYD Steel Yankee Dryer with an advanced steam and condensate system, and high-efficiency TT Hoods.
These hoods feature air system burners designed to accommodate multiple fuel types, including LPG and biomethane, providing flexibility in energy sourcing.
Toscotec also supplied its Burner Management System, which optimizes combustion efficiency through precise control of combustion air, and TT Drying Equilibrium, a system that automatically regulates air balance in the hoods.
These technologies contribute to maximizing drying efficiency, enabling faster basis weight changes and increased production output.
Lars Andersson, CEO of Duni Rexcell, highlighted the project’s environmental impact, stating, “The project successfully reduced our carbon footprint. This is an important part of our medium-term efforts toward our 2030 Net Zero target. Toscotec’s energy-efficient technology plays an important role in our mitigation commitments.”
Luca Carmignani, Project Manager at Toscotec, emphasized the rebuild’s smooth execution, noting, “The cooperation with the Rexcell team has been very effective throughout the entire project. Since start-up, PM1’s operation has been stable, and we have already achieved energy savings.”
Expansion in Europe and the USA
In addition to the Rexcell project, Toscotec has secured contracts to supply Yankee hood upgrades for a leading tissue manufacturer in Europe and the United States.
These projects, which are set to be completed in 2025, will feature high-efficiency Yankee hoods, an integrated burner system, and ductwork.
The TT Drying Equilibrium system will also be included to enhance air balance and ensure optimal energy efficiency and productivity.
The scope of these rebuilds encompasses engineering design, mechanical erection, commissioning, training, and start-up assistance, reinforcing Toscotec’s expertise in comprehensive tissue machine upgrades.
With these latest projects, Toscotec further cements its status as a global leader in tissue machine rebuilds.
The company’s success has been based on its ability to offer tailored engineering solutions, manage turnkey projects, and execute upgrades within tight shutdown schedules.
Gabriele Romanini, Sales Manager at Toscotec, stated, “Rebuilds are definitely in Toscotec’s DNA, as they require flexibility and the ability to customize designs to meet customer-specific needs.
“These projects will deliver substantial energy efficiency improvements and boost the mills’ production capacity.”
