THAILAND – TotalEnergies Corbion has introduced redesigned packaging bags for its sugarcane-derived Luminy PLA, incorporating 30% post-industrial recycled content in the outer layer.
This recycled material comes from high-quality scraps generated during manufacturing processes.
In a statement, the company explained that the new bags cut down on waste generation and lower the demand for fresh raw materials.
They also decrease emissions throughout the packaging supply chain. The design supports efforts to reuse materials in closed-loop systems.
“Luminy PLA provides biobased options that customers can recycle and compost, helping to lessen dependence on fossil-based resources,” said a TotalEnergies Corbion spokesperson.
The company produces this PLA at its facility in Rayong, Thailand, with an annual capacity of 75,000 tons.
This launch fits into broader operations that cover low-carbon PLA manufacturing, efficient logistics, and thoughtful packaging choices.
Earlier this year, TotalEnergies Corbion teamed up with Useon to push forward EPLA molded products, which are foam materials based on Luminy PLA.
These foams offer lightweight protection and strength for uses like food packaging and cold-chain transport.
At the beginning of 2025, Smart Planet Technologies unveiled an updated EarthCoating barrier for paper cups.
It mixes biobased PLA resin with a mineral blend, creating coatings that work in both composting and recycling streams.
The minerals allow removal during paper recycling, similar to clay fillers already in use.
Recent developments show growing momentum in PLA applications.
In July 2025, TotalEnergies Corbion partnered with CJ Biomaterials on a PLA/PHA blend for flexible films.
This combination improves stretch and breakdown in various environments, targeting packaging that replaces conventional plastics.
