ProAmpac’s  wax-free butter wrap gains Home Compostability certification 

USA – ProAmpac has launched its ButterFresh Parchment butter wrap, which earned TÜV Austria’s OK Compost Home certification for home compostability. 

This fiber-based solution avoids wax and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), targeting oil-based solids such as butter and margarine. 

The printed wrapper delivers grease resistance and dead-fold features to limit air exposure, helping preserve product freshness throughout use.

Engineers at ProAmpac engineered the material to sustain its barrier qualities and machine compatibility during high-speed filling lines. 

At disposal, it breaks down in backyard compost systems without industrial facilities. 

According to a company release, this design supports food producers seeking end-of-life options that fit domestic waste routines.

Ray Recchia, global innovation manager for sustainable paper packaging at ProAmpac, noted that the certification confirms the wrap’s ability to handle performance needs while enabling home composting. 

He added that fiber technologies like this address rising calls for PFAS-free options in dairy wrapping.

This development follows Aldi’s recent switch for two own-label butter products to paper-based wrappers suitable for home recycling. 

The change cuts more than 10 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually, easing landfill pressures on UK operations. 

Retailers project such transitions will scale across dairy aisles by 2026, driven by supplier demands for verifiable circular materials.

Further advances appear in thermoforming applications, where Scanfill and Sulapac introduced a wood composite foil for compostable packaging. 

The material serves as a direct substitute for PET films, featuring over 90 percent biobased content to trim carbon emissions in production. Trials show it processes on existing equipment, cutting adaptation costs for converters.

In a parallel effort, Novolex’s TerreGloss and Terrecote butter wraps for 4-ounce sticks secured Biodegradable Products Institute certification for commercial composting in March 2025. 

Made with a PFAS-free wax blend on renewable paper, these options also won the Flexible Packaging Association’s Gold Award for Sustainability.

Novolex stated the wraps match traditional foils in printability using eco-inks, supporting dairies in meeting consumer preferences for traceable disposal paths.
