Actega unveils water-based primer to advance sustainable label printing

New ACTDigi LEP Primer approved for HP’s expanded portfolio.

GERMANY – Actega introduced its new water-based ACTDigi LEP Primer at Labelexpo Europe 2025 in Brussels, Belgium, marking a key addition to HP’s expanded in-line primer portfolio.

Developed through a collaboration with HP, the primer targets optimal print results across diverse substrates like coated and uncoated papers, synthetics, and metallized materials.

It performs reliably on textured surfaces, including velvety papers and wine labels, by improving ink adhesion on HP Indigo 6K, 6K+, and 8K digital presses.

The product supports both in-line and near-line operations, easing cleanup and handling while fitting HP Indigo workflows.

When paired with Actega’s range of varnishes, such as UV, LED, water-based, E-Beam, and solvent-based options, it handles various substrates effectively.

Converters can apply it before processes like hot foil stamping to add visual effects or thermal transfer printing for durable results.

Its water resistance makes it ideal for beer labels and other moisture-exposed applications.

In a statement, Dr. Thomas Sawitowski, senior vice president of flexible packaging at Actega, said the launch stems from a long-term partnership with HP.

He noted that it advances print quality and offers flexible solutions for the labels sector’s changing demands.

Regina Guslitzer-Okner, head of supplies, applications, and sustainability at HP Indigo, described the effort as a collaboration that provides converters with reliable tools to meet market needs.

She highlighted how the primer enhances performance in a fast-paced environment.

Field tests by HP customers Nacara and HF Labels confirmed its benefits.

Vincent Garrigues, digital manager for France and Switzerland at Labelys Group, reported that the primer delivers even ink coverage on structured surfaces without gaps.

He added that Actega’s technical assistance helped fine-tune press settings, cutting primer use and prolonging the life of components like blankets and plates.

Garrigues mentioned this approach saves time on adjustments and prevents issues like yellowing.

The primer’s formulation avoids foaming and ghost images, leading to steady production.

It also cuts consumption for cost savings and complies with the Swiss Ordinance, Nestlé’s quality standards, and regulations for indirect food contact.

Free of solvents, heavy metals, phthalates, and CMR substances, it earned Cradle to Cradle material health certification, supporting eco-friendly practices.

Available in Europe this year via Actega’s network, it rolls out globally in 2026. Samples demonstrating its use appear at Actega’s booth 3D41 during the event.

According to a report by Future Market Insights, the China packaging primers sector is projected to reach US$990.1 million by 2035, driven by water-based options that reduce environmental impact and improve efficiency in digital printing.

This expansion ties into broader shifts, with firms like Rottneros Packaging AB launching sustainable solutions at Packaging Innovations & Empack 2025, emphasizing low-VOC primers for flexible formats.
