Sun Chemical unveils first HP Indigo-approved primer for label presses

USA – Sun Chemical has introduced its inaugural primer tailored for HP Indigo label presses, marking a new addition to digital printing options in the EMEA region. 

The product, named SunEvo EV-LWR09 WB LEP, is designed for use with HP Indigo’s in-line priming unit on models such as the 6X00, 6K, 6K+, 8X00 and 8K presses. 

Availability begins in the fourth quarter of 2025 through a gradual rollout across countries to provide targeted local assistance.

The primer emerged from joint efforts between Sun Chemical and HP teams, with testing conducted alongside several European label converters running multi-shift operations. 

These trials confirmed its effectiveness on diverse substrates in the pressure-sensitive label sector.

It accommodates materials like polyethylene, polypropylene, coated and uncoated papers, metallized papers and those for wine labels, enabling printers to handle varied stock-keeping units efficiently in digital setups.

UK-based Label Apeel participated in the qualification, testing the primer on its two HP Indigo machines. 

In a statement, managing director Helena McKinder said, “The final product performs exceptionally well across all substrates, with great performance in finishing.” 

She added that the company plans to continue using it after positive collaboration with Sun Chemical.

The primer promotes immediate ink adhesion at lower coat weights and reduced corona discharge voltages, which cuts energy use and offers cost savings. 

It also lessens substrate damage from heat, avoids voltage-related burns and prevents yellowing seen in other formulations.

Pete Saunders, global director of digital business at Sun Chemical, noted in a release that this launch provides customers with a flexible, productive and economical solution for label needs.

Regina Guslitzer-Okner, head of supplies, applications and sustainability at HP Indigo, stated that the primer results from combined expertise, allowing converters to improve operations and print quality while addressing market changes.

This development signals the start of Sun Chemical’s expanded digital innovation plans for the HP Indigo community in labels and packaging.

In related news, Michelman recently enhanced its water-based, PFAS-free primer lineup for HP Indigo presses, covering models from the 6K to the 200K and V12, supporting a broader range of digital printing applications.

HP Indigo is set to demonstrate its nonstop digital printing capabilities at Labelexpo Europe 2025, featuring the Indigo 6K+ and other models for labels and flexible packaging, highlighting ongoing industry advancements.
