Siegwerk acquires Allinova to expand sustainable packaging solutions

With the acquisition of the Dutch coating specialist, Siegwerk is further boosting its packaging coating business

GERMANY – Siegwerk Druckfarben, a leading supplier of printing inks and coatings, announced the acquisition of Allinova, a Netherlands-based specialty chemicals company.

The move enhances Siegwerk’s packaging coatings portfolio, expanding its expertise into paper mills and film manufacturing operations, beyond its traditional converter-focused business.

According to Gilles Le Moigne, Business Head of Circular Economy Coatings (CEC) at Siegwerk, “Allinova’s solutions perfectly align with our product portfolio, accelerating our mission to deliver innovative and sustainable coating solutions for the global packaging market.”

The acquisition integrates Allinova’s expertise in water-based dispersions, wax emulsions, and adhesives, enabling Siegwerk to offer advanced, application-specific solutions.

Allinova, founded in 2005 by Gijs Elfrink, initially specialized in flame retardants and wax emulsions.

In 2016, co-owner Bob Horsthuis joined, driving the expansion of its portfolio to include high-quality dispersions, repellents, and crosslinkers.

Elfrink noted that partnering with Siegwerk will allow Allinova’s expertise to reach a broader global market within a larger organization. Both owners will remain with the company to ensure a seamless transition.

In a statement, Siegwerk’s CEO, Nicolas Wiedmann, emphasized that the acquisition strengthens the company’s leadership in functional coatings, enhancing its ability to support circular packaging solutions across various applications.

This follows Siegwerk’s establishment of its CEC unit in April 2024, dedicated to sustainable packaging innovations aligned with circular economy principles.

The unit serves as a hub for integrating specialized coating technologies with Siegwerk’s conventional offerings.

The acquisition builds on Siegwerk’s prior strategic investments, including the 2022 purchase of La Sorgente, an Italian flexographic ink supplier for flexible packaging and paper applications. \

These moves have expanded Siegwerk’s global footprint and reinforced its commitment to sustainable packaging. Financial details of the Allinova deal remain undisclosed.

A recent report highlights Siegwerk’s ongoing innovation, with the company introducing a nitrocellulose-free ink series for polyethylene and polypropylene packaging in 2025, designed to meet sustainability guidelines from RecyClass and CEFLEX.

This complements the Allinova acquisition, further positioning Siegwerk as a leader in eco-friendly packaging solutions.

With this acquisition, Siegwerk is poised to drive innovation in the packaging industry, leveraging Allinova’s technical expertise to meet the growing demand for sustainable, high-performance coatings.

The company continues to align its growth strategy with the global shift toward a circular economy, delivering solutions that balance functionality and environmental responsibility.
