Mondragon Assembly buys ATP to enter food packaging market

SPAIN – Mondragon Assembly has acquired Barcelona-based ATP Engineering & Packaging in a move that formally marks its entry into the food packaging machinery segment.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

ATP, headquartered in Barberà del Vallès, has spent nearly 30 years designing and manufacturing packaging machinery and complete line solutions.

The company employs 60 people and generates annual sales of around €12 million (US$14.1 million), with approximately 50% of revenues derived from exports, primarily within Europe.

Its portfolio includes automatic packaging systems, multi-format cartoning and case-packing machinery, as well as plant logistics engineering services.

The firm serves customers across the food, hygiene, cosmetics and household goods sectors.

The acquisition enables Mondragon Assembly to diversify beyond its established automation platforms and enter the food packaging market, with a specific focus on picking and case-packing technologies.

ATP’s installed base and long-standing client relationships provide an immediate foothold in a segment experiencing steady investment, driven by automation demand and labour shortages in food processing.

Following the transaction, ATP is expected to leverage Mondragon Assembly’s international footprint and group management structure to scale operations.

For Mondragon Assembly, the deal strengthens its industrial automation portfolio while expanding its exposure to fast-moving consumer goods.

Mikel Gantxegi, general director of Mondragon Assembly, said the group aims to ensure the partnership “contributes to a lasting legacy of innovation and sustainable prosperity for all future generations involved in this joint project.”

Part of the wider Mondragon Corporation, Mondragon Assembly operates production facilities and subsidiaries globally, with sales offices in the US, India and Tunisia.

In 2025, the company reported turnover of €120 million, with nearly 80% generated from international markets, and employs more than 650 people worldwide.

The acquisition comes as Mondragon Assembly continues to strengthen its core solar business.

At REI Expo 2024 in India, the company showcased its latest PV module production tools, including its MTS-ECA tabber and stringer for heterojunction (HJT) cells, capable of processing up to 2,600 cut cells per hour with less than 0.2% breakage.

It also presented advanced autolayup, autobussing and membrane laminator systems designed for high-throughput module manufacturing.

The ATP deal signals a parallel growth track, positioning Mondragon Assembly to capture opportunities in both renewable energy manufacturing and automated food packaging lines.
