Veritiv launches compact cold chain packaging for pharmaceuticals

USA – Veritiv Operating Company has launched TempSafe RxShield, a compact packaging format for refrigerated medicines, responding to rising demand for GLP-1 treatments at speciality pharmacies.

TempSafe RxShield was developed to address operational needs with a smaller format and validated thermal performance. 

According to Veritiv, the packaging can retain refrigerated conditions for as long as 30 hours and meets ISTA 7E thermal testing standards. 

The 240-gram pack is designed to carry up to four 10-millilitre vials and includes a custom phase change material bottle to support temperature control. 

Its narrower design is intended to let operators store more units within current space and reduce shipping charges linked to dimensional weight.

Reusable Canister Improves Pharmacy Packout Processes

The format is intended to improve storage and packout processes in pharmacy and fulfilment settings, while the canister can be reused after delivery. 

The product targets drug manufacturers, healthcare distributors and home-delivery providers, as well as mail-order and speciality pharmacies handling temperature-sensitive treatments. 

TempSafe RxShield is available through Veritiv’s cold-chain network across the United States.

Leadership Cites Demand for Scalable Solutions

Chris Bradley, chief marketing officer at Veritiv, said that as speciality pharmacy demand continued to grow, customers needed packaging solutions that helped them scale efficiently without adding cost or complexity. 

He added that TempSafe RxShield delivered validated thermal protection in a compact design that helped reduce shipping costs, optimise operations and improve the patient delivery experience. 

The launch reflects broader growth in temperature-controlled pharmaceutical logistics, where biologics, vaccines and GLP-1 therapies require precise handling from manufacturing through last-mile delivery. 

Dimensional weight pricing has made compact packaging increasingly valuable, as carriers charge based on volume rather than actual mass. 

Reusable components also support sustainability objectives by reducing single-use material consumption across recurring delivery routes.

Acquisitions Extend Packaging Operations

In May, Veritiv Operating acquired Quick Pak in Tampa, Florida, and Stickel Packaging Supply in New Jersey. 

The deals add to Veritiv’s packaging operations in central Florida and broaden its reach in parts of the Northeast where its presence had been more limited, extending both service coverage and product supply.

These acquisitions form part of Veritiv’s strategy to strengthen regional distribution capabilities while expanding its cold-chain and speciality packaging offerings to healthcare and pharmaceutical customers across the country.
