ARMOR-IIMAK launches solvent-free wax ribbon delivering sustainability, efficiency, high-performance printing

ARMOR-IIMAK claim it to be the first wax ribbon with a 100% solvent-free formulation.

USA – ARMOR-IIMAK, a global leader in Thermal Transfer ribbon (TTR) technology, has launched AWR XL, a new-generation wax ribbon that promises to transform label printing through a blend of sustainability, performance, and cost efficiency.

The product will be officially showcased at LabelExpo Europe 2025 in Barcelona this September.

Designed for flat-head printers and widely used applications in logistics, retail, and shipping, AWR XL introduces a series of firsts in the wax ribbon category

Most notably, it is the first wax ribbon with a 100% solvent-free formulation, including the backcoat, and is produced with the industry’s thinnest 3.35µm PET film.

This innovation significantly reduces environmental impact, cutting plastic waste by up to 26% and saving 830g of CO₂ emissions per roll. Additional reductions in packaging and core material waste further enhance its eco-credentials.

“AWR XL is more than a product launch, it’s a statement of our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” said Yohann Froment, Senior VP Marketing at ARMOR-IIMAK.

“We’re proud to deliver a ribbon that not only meets the performance expectations of our customers but also supports their environmental goals.”

Beyond its sustainability edge, AWR XL delivers operational advantages. Its extra-long roll length allows for up to 40% more printer uptime, reducing the frequency of roll changes.

This translates into lower operational costs, reduced storage and logistics needs, and greater overall workflow efficiency.

Importantly, the ribbon maintains ARMOR-IIMAK’s hallmark high-quality print performance, while requiring less printhead energy to achieve optimal results, an added benefit for companies looking to balance efficiency with durability.

The launch of AWR XL also strategically expands ARMOR-IIMAK’s wax ribbon portfolio, which already includes AWR 1 and AWR 8.

Positioned as a premium yet practical alternative in a price-sensitive market, AWR XL provides distributors and partners with a differentiated, value-added solution.

The unveiling comes at a time when global regulations and industry standards are increasingly prioritizing sustainable packaging and printing practices.

By addressing both environmental concerns and operational efficiency, AWR XL is poised to meet the growing demand from businesses seeking to align with ESG goals without compromising performance.
