Origin’s 1881 caps can be made with 100% PCR PET and be used in food-grade applications.

USA – Berlin Packaging, a global leader in packaging solutions, has entered a strategic partnership with Origin Materials to supply sustainable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle caps.
The agreement focuses on Origin’s innovative PET 1881 caps, designed to enhance recyclability and support circular economy goals in the beverage industry.
According to a company statement, Berlin Packaging will distribute these caps to its extensive network, which includes major beverage manufacturers worldwide.
The PET 1881 caps, made with 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) PET, are suitable for food-grade applications, unlike many polypropylene and high-density polyethylene alternatives.
Their mono-material design simplifies recycling by eliminating the need to separate caps from bottles, addressing a key challenge in waste management.
In a statement, Origin Materials CEO John Bissell highlighted the partnership’s potential: “When we first connected with Berlin Packaging, the vision and alignment were clear.”
“Their global distribution network not only expands our reach for the 1881 caps but also paves the way for future closure innovations.”
The caps, produced through thermoforming rather than traditional injection molding, enable lighter packaging and extend product shelf life, offering both environmental and functional benefits.
Berlin Packaging’s sustainability vice-president, Balaji Jayaseelan, emphasized the company’s commitment to green innovation: “Our sustainability strategy prioritizes collaboration and measurable impact.”
“We share Origin’s belief that Anything Is Possible and are thrilled to bring their groundbreaking PET caps to our customers.”
With a network of 1,700 suppliers, over 55,000 stock-keeping units, and more than 100 global locations, Berlin Packaging is well-positioned to make these sustainable caps widely accessible.
This partnership follows Berlin Packaging’s recent acquisition of Cosmei, an Italian company specializing in beauty packaging, in July 2025.
Additionally, a recent report indicates that Origin Materials has furthered its European presence through a partnership with Royal Hordijk Packaging, announced on July 30, 2025.
This collaboration aims to mass-produce PET caps, including tethered designs compliant with the EU’s Single-Use Plastic Directive, further advancing recycling efficiency in the US$65 billion global caps and closures market.
