USA – Buckman, a global specialty chemical company, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art R&D pilot plant at its global headquarters in Memphis.
The US$10 million, 12,400-square-foot facility is named after Robert H. (Bob) Buckman, a former CEO and Chairman known for championing “knowledge sharing” and authoring the book Building a Knowledge-Driven Organization.
The new pilot plant reflects Buckman’s commitment to driving innovation in industries such as pulp and paper, water treatment, and leather, while also reducing environmental impact.
It will serve as a hub for scaling lab-based research into commercial solutions, enabling the company to test and refine chemical processes before full-scale production at its global manufacturing sites in the U.S., Brazil, South Africa, Europe, and China.
Designed with cutting-edge technology and safety standards, the pilot plant integrates advanced digital monitoring systems that collect real-time data to optimize product application and processes.
This facility enhances Buckman’s ability to launch innovative products, improve manufacturing efficiency, and respond swiftly to customer demands.
“This investment is more than financial; it’s a testament to our belief in innovation as a growth driver,” said Junai Maharaj, CEO of Buckman.
“The R&D pilot plant will not only attract top talent but also empower our team to turn ideas into solutions that benefit our customers and stakeholders.”
Maharaj emphasized the importance of fostering local talent through partnerships with educational institutions, offering internships and training to aspiring chemists and engineers.
This initiative aligns with Buckman’s mission to positively impact the community while strengthening Memphis’ reputation as a hub for innovation.
Commitment to sustainability
The pilot plant underscores Buckman’s dedication to sustainable practices, focusing on minimizing waste and enhancing resource efficiency.
Maharaj noted, “Our aim is to set a benchmark for environmental stewardship in the industry as we develop new technologies and processes.”
As Buckman approaches its 80th anniversary in 2025, the company continues to thrive under an independent management team established in 2017.
Maharaj highlighted the organization’s trajectory, “We are excited about the future and remain committed to delivering superior solutions to our customers, empowering our employees, and contributing to the economic vitality of Memphis.”
The facility not only represents a milestone in Buckman’s legacy of innovation but also reinforces its role as a leader in the specialty chemical industry.
Through this investment, Buckman is poised to shape the future of chemical solutions and sustainability, driving progress locally and globally.
