The APR Design for Recyclability Recognition signifies that the packaging design is compatible with North American recycling infrastructure

GERMANY – SIG has received recognition from the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) for its innovative SIG Terra RecShield BD bag-in-box wine packaging, which incorporates the SIG Terra FlexTap.
This marks the first time SIG’s wine packaging solution has been acknowledged for meeting stringent recyclability standards, ensuring compatibility with North American recycling infrastructure.
According to a statement from SIG, the packaging underwent rigorous validation through APR’s Critical Guidance Protocol, widely regarded as the most thorough method for confirming recyclability in North America.
The recognition highlights the packaging’s ability to balance environmental responsibility with performance, offering robust product protection and efficient dispensing functionality for wine brands.
“Wine packaging presents unique challenges, particularly in maintaining an effective oxygen barrier, ease of dispensing, and durability throughout the supply chain while ensuring recyclability,” said Teresa Bernal-Lara, SIG’s global head of film development.
“With SIG Terra RecShield BD, we’ve crafted a recycle-ready laminate that meets the demanding requirements of wine distribution and preservation.”
This achievement adds to SIG’s growing portfolio of sustainable solutions.
The company’s Terra line already includes two other APR-recognized products: the SIG Terra RecShield PE-42B for water, validated in 2021, and the SIG Terra RecShield D for post-mix syrup, recognized in 2024.
Each product is tailored to specific applications, demonstrating SIG’s commitment to advancing eco-friendly packaging practices.
In a recent development, SIG announced a partnership with PulPac to explore Dry Moulded Fiber technology for paper-based closures on its aseptic cartons.
This collaboration aims to further reduce plastic use and enhance recyclability, aligning with global sustainability goals.
