Sonoco achieves PSC accreditation for stewardship in sustainable pet packaging

The recognition is in response to Sonoco’s sustainable packaging solutions.

USA – Sonoco, a global leader in industrial and protective packaging, has earned accreditation from the Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC).

This recognition highlights the company’s commitment to integrating sustainability into its innovative packaging designs, aligning with the growing demand from consumers for environmentally responsible products.

According to Scott Byrne, Vice President of Global Sustainability at Sonoco, “As a packaging provider with over a century of experience, we see the pet sector as a powerful opportunity to apply our sustainability expertise where it matters most to people, pets, and the planet.”

“This accreditation validates our work to offer scalable, circular solutions that deliver on both performance and environmental responsibility.”

The PSC accolade highlights Sonoco’s progress in environmental stewardship and transparent reporting, reinforcing its role as a trailblazer in sustainable packaging.

A standout innovation is Sonoco’s GreenCan, a rigid paper container composed of 92-98% recycled fiber, topped with a paper lid.

Designed to maintain product freshness while minimizing environmental impact, GreenCan has gained traction in the pet care market.

For instance, DoggyLove, a German pet food brand, has adopted this solution to package its organic, plant-based dog treats, showcasing how sustainability can enhance brand appeal without compromising quality.

In a statement, Sonoco President and CEO Howard Coker emphasized, “Every step toward becoming a more sustainable packaging solutions provider must be informed by a clear vision. Our people are the driving force behind these initiatives and product innovations.”

This vision extends beyond product development, as Sonoco has partnered with the Darlington County Humane Society in Hartsville, South Carolina, to promote community education on sustainable practices.

A report by Packaging Europe notes that the 2025 Sustainability Awards finalists include several pet care brands leveraging recyclable and compostable materials, signaling a broader industry shift toward eco-conscious solutions.
