Valmet secures major papermaking deal in China

Valmet’s technology is expected to improve production efficiency while maintaining high standards.

CHINA – Finnish company Valmet to supply two advanced fine papermaking lines to a Chinese customer, according to a recent announcement.

The deal includes automation systems and services, with the lines set to produce uncoated woodfree grades. Operations are slated to begin between late 2026 and early 2027.

The order, recorded in Valmet’s second-quarter 2025 orders, strengthens the company’s ongoing partnership with the customer.

Valmet has previously delivered various technologies, including complete paper and board-making lines, to the same client. Financial details of the agreement remain undisclosed.

Xiangdong Zhu, Valmet’s executive vice-president and China chair, stated: “These new, wide, high-speed paper machines incorporate cutting-edge technologies to ensure high capacity and performance.”

Zhu also noted that the order highlights the success of prior deliveries to the customer, emphasizing the strategic importance of this collaboration for Valmet in China.

In a related development, Valmet recently restructured its financial reporting as of July 1, 2025.

The company now operates under two main segments: Biomaterial Solutions, which provides technology and services for pulp, paper, and energy sectors, and Process Performance Solutions, focused on flow control and automation technologies for various industries.

In addition to the China deal, a recent web search revealed that Valmet secured a contract in June 2025 with Eren Holding for a furnace upgrade and long-term service agreement at Shotton Mill in the UK.

The project, aimed at enhancing the mill’s efficiency, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. This follows Valmet’s broader efforts to support sustainable production through advanced technology solutions.

The Chinese papermaking lines are designed to meet growing demand for high-quality, uncoated woodfree grades, which are often used in printing and writing papers.

The company’s continued focus on innovative solutions supports the global push for sustainable packaging and paper production.

This latest order reinforces Valmet’s role as a key player in the global pulp and paper industry, building on its expertise in delivering tailored solutions.

The collaboration with its Chinese partner is set to drive advancements in high-performance papermaking, with both parties committed to a long-term partnership.
