The new sealants provide stable viscosity, high solvent resistance, and thermal stability.

GERMANY – Henkel Adhesive Technologies has introduced a new line of Darex COV sealants, free from phthalate-based plasticizers, designed for metal packaging.
According to the company, these sealants ensure reliable sealing while prioritizing health and environmental safety.
The launch responds to growing demand for sustainable packaging and stricter regulations, such as the European REACH framework.
The phthalate-free polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-based compounds, led by Darex COV 73, are set to gradually replace existing products.
In a statement, Henkel’s market strategy manager, Laura Baussà, said, “Our new Darex COV series offers safe alternatives for employees and end users without sacrificing performance.”
The sealants provide stable viscosity, high resistance to solvents, and thermal stability, making them suitable for nozzle application in industrial settings.
A key feature of Darex COV 73 is its ability to cure at lower temperatures, which reduces energy use and cuts the carbon footprint of the application process.
The formulation avoids ingredients classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction, addressing concerns about phthalates, which are flagged as potential endocrine disruptors by regulatory bodies.
The European Commission has also listed several related substances as materials of high concern, prompting Henkel’s proactive shift to safer alternatives.
The development of Darex COV 73 stemmed from a pilot project with Emballator, a Swedish metal packaging manufacturer.
Emballator began transitioning its facilities to the new sealant in 2024, aligning with its sustainability goals and preparing for upcoming regulatory changes.
Tests under real-world conditions confirmed the sealant’s smooth application and effective performance, ensuring it meets industry standards for metal packaging, such as paint buckets and chemical containers.
Recent industry updates highlight Henkel’s broader commitment to sustainable packaging.
At FACHPACK 2025, Henkel showcased additional resource-efficient adhesive solutions for end-of-line packaging and fiber-based materials, emphasizing compliance with the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
The company’s Packaging RecycLab, a testing environment, further supports the development of recyclable packaging, helping manufacturers meet future legal requirements.
