Mondi helps Büromodel reduce packing costs by 20% with corrugated packaging

Tailored corrugated solution replaces wooden crates, improving logistics efficiency, product protection and workplace safety for furniture exports.

AUSTRIA – Global packaging and paper company Mondi has partnered with office furniture manufacturer Büromodel to replace traditional wooden shipping crates with a bespoke corrugated packaging solution, reducing operational packing costs by approximately 20% while improving efficiency and product protection.

The collaboration was developed to support Büromodel’s distribution of acoustic office cabins across Europe and international export markets, where the company’s existing wood-based packaging had become increasingly inefficient and costly.

According to Mondi, the wooden crates created operational bottlenecks during production and packing while also presenting health and safety concerns associated with handling heavier packaging.

The company also experienced mould formation during sea freight, affecting product quality and increasing supply chain risks.

In addition, wooden packaging had become less suitable for certain export markets, including Germany and the UK, prompting Büromodel to seek a more efficient and reliable alternative.

Working closely with the furniture manufacturer, Mondi designed a customized corrugated packaging system tailored to the dimensions, handling requirements and logistics processes of Büromodel’s acoustic office cabins.

The new packaging delivers robust product protection while eliminating the mould issues previously encountered during ocean transportation.

It also requires less time and labour to assemble, enabling faster packing operations and improving overall workflow efficiency.

Importantly, the solution integrates into Büromodel’s existing production and logistics processes without requiring additional capital investment.

“Moving away from wooden packaging was a strategic decision for us,” said Sinan Müsellim, Procurement Manager at Büromodel.

“Mondi’s team understood our operational requirements and worked with us to find a solution we could trust across different markets. That confidence in the packaging is just as important as the efficiency gains.”

Beyond the estimated 20% reduction in packing costs, the new packaging has delivered several operational benefits, including improved workplace safety by reducing manual handling risks, better warehouse utilization through stackable packaging, enhanced logistics efficiency and stronger product protection during transportation.

The recyclable corrugated packaging has also received positive feedback from customers while supporting Büromodel’s sustainability objectives.

Metin Morhayim, Sales and Marketing Director at Mondi Corrugated Turkey, said the project demonstrates the value of treating packaging as an integral part of business operations rather than simply a protective component.

“This project shows what is possible when packaging is treated as part of the customer’s operation, not just a protective layer. By working closely with Büromodel, we were able to design a solution that fits their processes and supports their business needs,” he said.

The partnership reflects a growing trend across the industrial and furniture sectors, where manufacturers are redesigning transport packaging to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs and enhance sustainability.

Corrugated packaging is increasingly replacing traditional wooden crates due to its lighter weight, recyclability and ability to optimize logistics while maintaining product protection.

As companies seek greater supply chain resilience and lower operating costs, fit-for-purpose packaging solutions are becoming an important driver of productivity and competitive advantage.
