Allimand, Pakka partner to build sustainable paper machine in Ayodhya, India

INDIA – French paper machinery specialist Allimand has partnered with Indian sustainable packaging company Pakka to build a state-of-the-art paper machine dedicated to producing regenerative flexible packaging papers in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.

The collaboration marks a major step in strengthening India’s capacity for environmentally responsible packaging materials.

Pakka, listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) since 2023, is a pioneer in eco-friendly food packaging solutions made from agricultural residues such as bagasse.

Its Ayodhya site already operates a pulp plant, three paper machines, and a modern moulded fibre unit producing compostable food serviceware under the Chuk brand, including its widely used bagasse-based food trays.

Under the new partnership, Allimand will supply a high-tech paper machine with a daily capacity of 115 tonnes.

The system will feature the French manufacturer’s advanced S Hydraulic Headbox with dilution control, Inertial Shaking Unit, Shoe Press with Transfer Belt, SC Sizer, and Soft Calenders, technologies designed to deliver high-quality, greaseproof, and flexible paper grades suited for sustainable packaging applications.

The initiative aligns with Pakka’s broader strategy to tap into India’s fast-growing compostable and flexible packaging market.

According to industry analysts, the segment is witnessing double-digit growth as brands and manufacturers shift toward renewable and plastic-free alternatives amid tightening environmental regulations.

This development follows Pakka’s Rs 2.44 billion (US$29 million) investment secured in 2024 to expand its production capabilities.

The funds will support the establishment of a new compostable flexible packaging facility in Ayodhya, expected to be fully operational by December 2025.

The expansion is projected to double the company’s current output and strengthen its position in India’s sustainable materials landscape.

Commenting on the collaboration, Jagdeep Hira, Pakka’s India Business Head, said, “With this increase in the production of flexible packaging, Pakka can expand its market distribution.

“Our enhanced capacity will enable us to meet the growing demand for flexible packaging solutions across various sectors.”

The partnership also reinforces Allimand’s growing footprint in India’s specialty paper sector, where it has been a preferred technology provider for decades.

Together, Allimand and Pakka aim to drive innovation in regenerative packaging, advancing India’s transition to a circular economy while supporting global sustainability goals.
