Coveris expands CPP film capacity with GEFO acquisition to meet recyclable mono-material demand

The transaction adds to Coveris’s recyclable packaging range and supports its ‘No Waste’ sustainability vision, which aims to eliminate product waste, packaging waste and operational waste.

GERMANY – Coveris has acquired GEFO Folienbetrieb’s cast polypropylene film operations in Gera, Germany, adding production capacity for specialty CPP applications as the company responds to growing European demand for recyclable mono-material packaging solutions.

The acquisition, announced on 15 June 2026, follows substantial investments in film extrusion technology across Coveris’s European network.

Prior to the deal, Coveris Kufstein in Austria was the company’s only CPP extrusion site and was operating at full capacity.

The integration of GEFO’s operations enables Coveris to expand its CPP production capabilities while broadening its product portfolio across high-growth application areas including retort packaging, lidding films, bakery bags, medical packaging and other non-food applications.

How CPP Film Expansion Supports ‘No Waste’ Sustainability Strategy and PPWR Compliance

The transaction adds to Coveris’s recyclable packaging range and supports its ‘No Waste’ sustainability vision, which aims to eliminate product waste, packaging waste and operational waste.

Coveris CEO Christian Kolarik said that GEFO was an excellent addition to the existing network and further strengthened the company’s sustainability strategy.

He noted that demand for recyclable mono-material packaging continued to grow across Europe, making the expansion of CPP capabilities for high-performance applications a logical next step.

The added capacity may help customers prepare for the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation and Extended Producer Responsibility rules.

What 3% Annual European CPP Market Growth Means for Flexible Packaging Converters

CPP films are becoming an increasingly important material category within flexible packaging due to their recyclability characteristics and compatibility with mono-polymer structures.

The European CPP market is expected to grow by approximately 3 percent annually, with highly technical segments such as retort, medical and lidding applications projected to grow by more than 4 percent, driven by sustainability requirements and the replacement of non-recyclable substrates.

In April 2026, Coveris launched MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist, a paper-based packaging material for confectionery products that meets the industry’s 95/5 guidelines for paper recyclability.

Through ReCover, Coveris’s recycling division, the company aims to recycle 50,000 tonnes of plastic by 2026 and 90,000 tonnes by 2030.
