EGA’s innaugurates Al Taweelah recycling plant that turns UAE scrap into 95% less energy aluminium

UAE – Emirates Global Aluminium has inaugurated the UAE’s largest aluminium recycling plant at Al Taweelah in Abu Dhabi, with an annual capacity of 185,000 tonnes that processes post-consumer and pre-consumer scrap into low-carbon billets under the RevivAL brand, while producing recycled aluminium with up to 95 percent less energy than primary production.

The facility, which began producing recycled aluminium in February 2026 and resumed full operations in May after a temporary pause, represents a significant step in EGA’s global recycling expansion strategy and supports the UAE’s Circular Economy Policy objectives. 

Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, stated that recycling aluminium requires up to 95 percent less energy compared to producing new primary aluminium from raw ore, saving significant energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 

The plant’s products include RevivAL branded billets and T-bars, with CelestiAL-R combining recycled content with solar-powered primary aluminium and MinimAL-R blending recycled metal with nuclear-produced aluminium.

How 4 Million Work Hours and 26,300 Cubic Metres of Concrete Delivered the UAE’s Largest Recycling Facility

Construction of the Al Taweelah plant required approximately 4 million work hours and was completed without any injuries resulting in lost work time. 

The project utilised more than 26,300 cubic metres of concrete, equivalent to the volume of more than 10 Olympic-size swimming pools, and over 4,600 metric tonnes of structural steel, almost two-thirds of the iron weight of the Eiffel Tower. 

Final commissioning was temporarily paused following an attack on Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi on 28 March, resuming in April with recycled cast metal production restarting in early May. Ramp-up to full production is expected to take up to six months, in line with the original schedule, subject to scrap availability.

What 400,000-Tonne Global Recycling Capacity and 200,000-Tonne Development Pipeline Mean for Aluminium Packaging

Historically, most aluminium scrap generated in the UAE has been exported for processing overseas, limiting its contribution to the domestic economy. The Al Taweelah facility makes EGA the largest consumer of aluminium scrap in the UAE, keeping more value within the national industrial sector. 

Including the Al Taweelah plant and a planned acquisition of an 80 percent stake in Italian recycler Eco Green, EGA’s aluminium recycling capacity now exceeds 400,000 tonnes per year across the UAE, Europe and the United States, with an additional 200,000 tonnes under development. 

EGA is also expanding its German operations six-fold near Hannover with 150,000 tonnes per year capacity expected by 2028, while EGA Spectro Alloys in Minnesota completed a 65,000-tonne expansion in 2025 with a second phase adding 35,000 tonnes by 2027. 

The Al Taweelah facility supports both EGA’s strategy to expand low-carbon aluminium production and the UAE’s objectives to strengthen industrial sustainability and develop a circular economy.
