Kazakhstan’s US$127M glass recycling plant targets 240M packaging containers annually in Kyzylorda

KAZAKHSTAN – Kazakhstan has broken ground on a 60 billion tenge (US$127 million) glass recycling and packaging container manufacturing plant in the Kyzylorda Region, with an annual production capacity of up to 240 million glass bottles and the creation of 250 jobs.

The project, developed by Seven Rivers Technologies LLP with financial support from Zhasyl Damu JSC and the Industrial Development Fund JSC, is set to become one of the region’s largest environmental and industrial facilities. 

The plant will specialise in recycling glass waste and producing glass containers, reducing dependence on imported glass packaging while strengthening Kazakhstan’s circular economy infrastructure. 

The facility will be commissioned in phases between 2026 and 2028, with the project expected to process up to 50,000 tonnes of glass annually using German technology from Horn Glass Industries AG.

German Technology and Local Investment Drive Circular Economy Goals for Glass Packaging

The plant will incorporate advanced glass melting technology from Horn Glass Industries AG, a German manufacturer specialising in equipment for glass production. 

The facility’s annual capacity of 240 million glass containers will supply the domestic market with locally produced packaging for beverages, food products and pharmaceuticals, reducing Kazakhstan’s reliance on imported glass packaging. 

Serikbol Kaliakbarov, Director of the Investment Projects Department at Zhasyl Damu, stated that the implementation of such projects is of strategic importance for building a circular economy and developing Kazakhstan’s green industry, with the new plant not only reducing the volume of glass waste but also supplying the domestic market with locally produced glass containers.

Environmental Impact and Regional Economic Development

The plant is expected to create 250 permanent jobs, contributing significantly to the regional economy and employment growth in the Kyzylorda Region. 

The ministry noted that the project will strengthen Kazakhstan’s environmental infrastructure, increase waste recycling rates, and promote the adoption of modern environmental standards in industry. 

Additionally, the launch of the facility will create new opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses and enhance the investment attractiveness of the Kyzylorda Region. 

The project aligns with Kazakhstan’s broader transition to a green economy, supported by the Industrial Development Fund and Zhasyl Damu’s programme to support waste processing enterprises across the country. 

The availability of locally manufactured glass packaging is expected to benefit domestic beverage and food producers who currently rely on imported glass containers, reducing logistics costs and carbon emissions associated with long-distance transport.
