Graco signs agreement to acquire Valco Melton, expanding adhesive dispensing, inspection for packaging markets

The combination allows Graco to offer a broader portfolio to packaging customers: a single supplier for adhesive pumps, dispensing valves, and quality inspection systems.

USA – Graco has signed an agreement to acquire Valco Melton, adding adhesive dispensing and inspection technology for packaging markets, with the transaction expected to close in the third quarter.

Valco Melton has a 74-year history of supplying adhesive dispensing and inspection technology in 87 countries, with more than 650 employees.

The company will continue to serve industrial and packaging markets with technology that enhances product quality and manufacturing performance.

The acquisition is expected to build on complementary capabilities and support continued global growth.

The Role of Adhesive Dispensing in Packaging

Adhesive dispensing systems control the application of hot melt adhesives, cold glues, and other bonding materials in packaging lines.

For corrugated box manufacturers, precise adhesive application ensures that flaps seal properly without glue seepage that can jam downstream equipment.

For label converters, consistent adhesive coat weight prevents label lifting or adhesive bleed-through. Valco Melton’s inspection systems use cameras and sensors to verify that adhesive has been applied correctly, rejecting faulty packages before they leave the line.

A packaging line without adhesive inspection risks shipping boxes that will open in transit, causing product damage and customer returns.

Complementary Capabilities

Graco is known for fluid handling equipment, including pumps, sprayers, and dispensers used in industrial finishing and lubrication applications.

Valco Melton’s expertise is specifically in adhesive dispensing and inspection for packaging and converting.

The combination allows Graco to offer a broader portfolio to packaging customers: a single supplier for adhesive pumps, dispensing valves, and quality inspection systems.

For a corrugated plant that currently buys a Graco pump for glue supply and a separate Valco Melton system for adhesive detection, the acquisition promises integrated equipment and single-source support.

A 74-Year Legacy

Valco Melton has operated for 74 years, building a global network of distributors and service technicians.

In packaging, brand reputation matters: a line stoppage due to an adhesive system failure can cost thousands of dollars per hour in lost production.

Valco Melton’s installed base in 87 countries means that a packaging plant in almost any region can get local support.

The acquisition preserves the Valco Melton brand and management, suggesting that Graco values the customer relationships and technical expertise the company has built over decades.
