LATVIA – Paper packaging giant Antalis has acquired Eastern European food and industrial packaging manufacturer and distributor Pakella, for an undisclosed fee.

Pakella is one of the leading packaging distributors in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, with a €15 million (US$16.29m) turnover in 2023 and 60 employees across its three distribution sites.

Founded in 1996, the Pakella Group designs and manufactures made-to-measure industrial and food packaging, having developed unique and specific expertise in various sectors over more than 20 years, particularly in the food industry.

Antalis, already well established in Europe, continues to expand its presence in the worldwide packaging distribution market.

Following the acquisition of Portuguese company 100 Metros at the beginning of 2024, Pakella will strengthen Antalis’ offering in the Baltic countries’ industrial and food packaging market.

Commenting on the acquisition, Hervé Poncin, CEO of Antalis, said: “The acquisition of Pakella is a great opportunity. It will enable Antalis to significantly expand its existing packaging distribution business in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

“It demonstrates the ongoing commitment to our customers in the Baltic countries following our acquisition of Hansapakend in Estonia in 2015.”

“By joining Antalis, Pakella will be able to broaden its product portfolio and continue its development thanks to a wider product range and new international customers,” added Janis Murmanis, member of the board at Pakella.

The agreement is subject to the satisfaction of customary conditions, including the approval of the Latvian competition authority.

Logson Group acquires Challenge Packaging

In a separate development, UK’s largest independent supplier of corrugated packaging, Logson Group, has completed the acquisition of Challenge Packaging, an independent sheet plant based in East Sussex.

Family-owned Challenge Packaging operates a 10,000 m² site with a design lab and customer experience centre, a 3.000+ pallet storage and a fleet of more than 10 vehicles.

The offering comprises an online shop, cardboard boxes, UN-certified packaging to book mailers, bubble wrap, envelopes and sustainable packaging for moving.

Colin Prior, Sales Director and Simon Allen, Chairman, along with the rest of the existing management team will remain with the business, continuing to lead Challenge Packaging as a stand-alone business within the Logson Group.

Challenge Packaging will join the existing Logson Group’s brands and collectively they form a unique mix of companies offering a full range of corrugated packaging solutions from over 20 locations across the UK.
