Amcor bolsters portfolio with acquisition of Chinese medical device packaging firm MDK

CHINA – Global packaging company, Amcor has announced the acquisition of Chinese medical device packaging firm MDK expanding its healthcare platform in the APAC region.

Based in Shanghai, MDK supplies paper-based packaging and coating capabilities for companies in China’s medical device sector.

The firm generates annual sales of approximately US$50 million and is a leading provider of medical device packaging, a key priority growth segment for Amcor.

MDK’s coating capabilities, medical paper-based packaging offerings and customer base complement Amcor’s existing portfolio, further enhancing its leading position in the Chinese medical device packaging market.

The addition of MDK also strengthens Amcor’s leadership in the broader Asia Pacific medical packaging segment, which now comprises four manufacturing sites serving China, India, Japan and Southeast Asian markets.

The deal is expected to close around March this year if it receives all customary regulatory approvals. The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.

Ron Delia CEO of Amcor said: “As Amcor continues to sharpen its focus on higher growth priority segments, the addition of MDK will enhance our already strong healthcare platform in the Asia Pacific region.

“MDK’s talented team brings strong capabilities and a complementary product and customer portfolio. We look forward to working together to unlock value creation opportunities for customers in this fast-growing, high-value segment, which we believe will help us continue to deliver strong returns for our shareholders.”

The acquisition of MDK comes barely a month after Amcor opened its US$100 million advanced flexible packaging manufacturing plant in Huizhou, China.

The plant features China’s first automated packaging production line, as well as high-speed printing presses, laminators and bag-making machines.

Amcor claims that the 590,000-square-foot plant is the largest flexible packaging plant by production capacity in China, further strengthening its ability to meet growing customer demand throughout Asia Pacific.

According to Amcor, the plant comes equipped with the first automated packaging production line in China, along with high-speed printing presses, laminators, and bag-making machines, which can deliver double-digit reductions in manufacturing cycle times.

Back in August, the company also opened Innovation Center in Jiangyin, China, bringing advanced packaging technologies and more sustainable material science to the Asia Pacific, helping to drive growth and innovation across the region.

The facility offers the Catalyst program, which is a flexible, collaborative, and creative approach to co-innovation that allows customers to customize solutions for their markets and customers, leveraging advanced analytical and material science labs.
