Asahi Photoproducts rolls out Esko Quartz-Certified AWP-CLFQ plate for eco-friendly flexo packaging

The new AWP™-CLFQ combines Quartz precision with CleanPrint productivity to deliver gravure-level quality in a solventless flexo plate.

JAPAN – Asahi Photoproducts has introduced the AWP-CLFQ water-wash plate, certified by Esko for Quartz imaging, marking a key advancement in solvent-free flexographic printing.

The certification occurred on October 27 during AWP Days 2025 in Japan, where Esko handed over official confirmation to Asahi representatives.

This plate targets flexible packaging converters seeking gravure-level results without solvent use.

The AWP-CLFQ integrates pixel-precise screening with Asahi’s CleanPrint technology, enabling sharp highlights, seamless vignettes to zero, and solid ink coverage on press.

Designed for Esko Quartz and compatible with Crystal MCWSI workflows, it maintains stable dots from plate to print.

Converters can now produce high-density prints on films and complex substrates using familiar water-wash processes.

Aki Kato, senior general manager of Asahi’s Photoproducts Division, stated, “AWP-CLFQ gives converters a decisive reason to switch from gravure to flexo.”

He added that the combination of Esko’s precision and Asahi’s productivity delivers consistent quality in a sustainable setup.

According to Kato, this shift cuts down on environmental impacts from traditional solvent methods.

The plate debuted at AWP Days, an event highlighting Asahi’s Solvent ZERO initiative, which promotes water-based alternatives for packaging.

Attendees viewed print demos showing strong whites and fades on varied materials.

Earlier previews at Allstein’s Automation Open House demonstrated its handling of polyurethane solvent and water-based inks, thanks to CleanPrint’s surface energy that prevents residue buildup.

In a statement, Asahi announced a phased commercial launch for select converters globally, backed by Esko and regional distributors.

Initial availability focuses on 1.14 mm thickness plates, with 1.7 mm versions in development. Production ramp-up will expand access over the coming months.

The AWP-CLFQ suits narrow-web UV flexo alongside its core flexible packaging role, where it excels on demanding films. Its clean transfer supports emerging inks, minimizing press downtime and boosting overall equipment effectiveness.

Asahi’s move fits into broader efforts to phase out rotogravure, offering converters tangible gains in speed and eco-performance.

“With this plate, Asahi continues its push toward zero-solvent platemaking, equipping the industry for more efficient, low-emission production.”
