Canon expands into corrugated packaging with high-speed corrPRESS iB17 digital press

The corrPRESS iB17 delivers offset-like print quality at speeds of up to 8,000 m² per hour.

UAE — Canon has taken a major leap into the corrugated packaging sector with the launch of its corrPRESS iB17, a next-generation digital inkjet press designed for industrial-scale corrugated production.

The announcement was made at the FEFCO Technical Seminar 2025 in Rome, underscoring Canon’s strategic ambition to become a leading force in digital labels and packaging.

The corrPRESS iB17 delivers offset-like print quality at speeds of up to 8,000 m² per hour, enabling converters to produce runs of up to 20,000 m² efficiently.

Built for flexibility, the press prints directly onto corrugated boards up to 1.7 meters wide using water-based pigment inks and primers suitable for indirect food contact, aligning with tightening environmental and food safety standards.

Canon’s fully integrated design, covering printheads, inks, and drying systems, ensures optimal synchronisation for high-quality output and reliability.

Its automated printhead cleaning, quality control systems, and print-on-demand capability reduce waste, operator dependency, and energy use, while eliminating the need for printing plates and chemicals.

“Converters are under pressure to deliver more variants, faster turnarounds, and premium quality without increasing costs,” said Jennifer Kolloczek, Senior Director, Marketing & Innovation, Production Printing, Canon EMEA.

“The corrPRESS iB17 empowers them to meet these challenges with agility and confidence.”

The system’s high-definition 1200 dpi piezo printheads reproduce vivid colours and fine detail on both coated and uncoated boards, covering up to 80% of retail packaging applications.

By removing the traditional lamination step, the printer streamlines operations and enhances sustainability.

Canon’s move mirrors a broader industry trend toward digital transformation in corrugated printing.

Earlier in 2025, HP expanded its PageWide T700i Press to meet high-volume packaging needs, while EFI introduced its Nozomi 14000 SD, featuring advanced single-pass inkjet technology and energy-efficient curing.

Similarly, Durst’s P5 500 and Koenig & Bauer Durst’s SPC 130 have gained traction for combining vibrant digital printing with sustainable ink systems.

With corrPRESS iB17, Canon joins these innovators in redefining how corrugated packaging is produced, shifting from analogue to agile, digital-driven manufacturing that balances speed, quality, and sustainability.
