CHINA – US-based pharmaceutical company, Catalent has completed the expansion of its clinical supply facility in the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Shanghai, China.

The expansion increased the facility by approximately 30,000 ft2, which has allowed for the installation of additional refrigerated and deep-frozen storage, as well as the expansion of secondary packaging capabilities.

The completion of the facility will be marked by two events on Dec. 1 and Dec. 6, 2022, where the facilities at the site will be showcased and workshops on clinical supply management and new GMP policies will be held.

Tracey Clare, General Manager, APAC Operations, Catalent said: “China is the fastest growing clinical trials market in the Asia-Pacific region, and Catalent continues to invest and expand its facilities and services to offer dependable, flexible, and integrated support to customers.

“These additional capabilities increase the site’s ability to support clinical trials for advanced therapeutics, which often require specialized storage and handling capabilities.”

The Waigaoqiao facility is one of two clinical supply facilities that Catalent operates in Shanghai; the other is located in Tangzhen, outside of the FTZ.

The two facilities provide sponsors with optimized supply solutions for studies being undertaken in China, the Asia-Pacific region, and globally.

These include clinical supply management, comparator sourcing, FastChain demand-led supply, primary and secondary packaging, storage, and global distribution, as well as clinical returns and destruction.

Meanwhile, the company also invested US$2.2 million to expand its Singapore clinical supply facility in September.

According to Catalent, the investment is expected to increase the site’s footprint by nearly 20%, to 31,000 square feet, and allow the installation of 35 new freezers for ultra-low temperature storage.

The expansion also includes the addition of specialized secondary packaging capabilities for ULT products, enabling the site’s services to support larger packaging campaigns, and increasing capabilities to handle biopharmaceuticals and advanced modalities, including mRNA-based vaccines, and cell and gene therapies.

The company’s facilities in Singapore, China and Japan, provide a wide range of clinical supply services to the Asia-Pacific region.

The services include clinical supply management, comparator sourcing, Catalent’s FastChain demand-led supply solution, secondary packaging, storage, and international distribution, as well as clinical returns and destruction.
