The new linerless technology is designed to reduce raw material usage by up to 50% by eliminating the need for conventional label backing materials.

UK – Cobalt Systems, a UK-based printing systems manufacturer, has launched its NEXUS20 Linerless Print and Apply range to boost operational efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of businesses.
This innovation utilizes direct thermal media from UPM Adhesive Materials to streamline production and reduce waste.
The new linerless technology is designed to reduce raw material usage by up to 50% by eliminating the need for conventional label backing materials.
This advancement reduces waste as well as increases the number of labels per roll.
This innovation leads to less frequent changeovers and improved uptime for production lines.
The NEXUS20 Linerless system features standard 4inches and 6inches widths and is capable of printing, cutting, and applying labels to the required length. The design reduces the need for ribbons.
Additionally, The NEXUS20 Linerless system requires fewer roll changes, lower storage needs, and reduced shipping costs as each reel delivers double the yield of a reel with a liner.
Cobalt Systems managing director and founder Tony Hunt remarked, “We’ve invested significant time in research, development, and rigorous field testing to ensure our NEXUS20 Linerless Print and Apply range meets the same exacting standards our customers have come to expect from Cobalt.”
“This isn’t just about adopting new technology, it’s about giving our customers complete confidence in a solution that performs reliably, day in and day out, in the most demanding environments, whilst delivering all the benefits of linerless labels.”
The new system offers high application speeds, and high print resolution, and can be easily adopted by manufacturers.
The innovation is meant to meet the industry’s demand for more sustainable packaging practices for the food and beverage, logistics, and pharmaceutical packaging sectors.
Cobalt Systems has been in the engineering field for approximately 25 years and its solution comes with a three-year warranty and is supported by UK-based installation and service teams.
Hunt added, “Linerless labeling represents a smart and effective step forward in reducing material waste and carbon impact. When combined with the fact that these systems are manufactured in the UK by a certified carbon-neutral company, it’s a solution that not only supports operational efficiency but also helps our customers move meaningfully toward their environmental goals.”
