DS Smith, BSH Nazarje introduce eco-friendly cardboard solution for Bosch hand mixers

The collaboration replaces the previous expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) inserts with a fully recyclable corrugated cardboard alternative.

UK – DS Smith has teamed up with BSH Nazarje, a Slovenian subsidiary of the BSH Home Appliances Group, to create a new corrugated cardboard packaging for Bosch hand mixers.

This fiber-based option, known as the DS Smith Universal Protection for Household Blenders, swaps out the previous expanded polystyrene foam inserts.

The shift comes as BSH Nazarje manufactures around 170,000 blenders each year, with every unit formerly using two foam pieces.

According to company estimates, the change could remove up to 340,000 foam inserts annually, cutting down on plastic waste in the supply chain.

In a statement, Jožica Hojnik, director of sales and innovation at DS Smith Slovenia, expressed enthusiasm for the project.

“When a customer entrusts us with a challenge such as the reduction of EPS, we are excited to provide them with an innovative packaging product and to build a collaborative relationship with them at the same time,” she said.

The new design features a protective insert called Safe Shell, tailored for three different hand mixer models.

Rok Štifter, director of shared development services for the Small Household Appliances Division at BSH Home Appliances Group, noted that the company seeks solutions balancing efficiency and environmental concerns.

He added in his remarks that the partnership demonstrated how to achieve faster processes and strong protection using fully recyclable cardboard.

This packaging integrates seamlessly without altering Bosch’s current boxes, pallets, or assembly lines, while offering improved durability during shipping.

It also speeds up packing times on the production floor, enhancing operational flow.

Building on this, DS Smith has pursued similar initiatives with other BSH divisions.

Earlier this year, the company developed a plastic-free cardboard packaging for Bosch heat pumps, eliminating 100,000 plastic components and reducing CO2 emissions by 310 tons per year, as detailed in recent industry reports.

Furthermore, DS Smith’s latest sustainability updates highlight progress in reusable packaging trials and a 51% drop in landfill waste since 2019.

The collaboration with BSH Nazarje marks another step in reducing reliance on non-recyclable materials in household goods.

By focusing on minimal material use and full recyclability, the solution supports broader industry moves toward greener alternatives.
