The company actively recycles and refurbishes equipment at the end of its lifecycle, diverting waste from landfills

USA – GE HealthCare has launched an initiative to reduce costs and environmental impact through innovative eco-friendly packaging and equipment recycling programs.
According to company leaders, these efforts are designed to enhance sustainability while delivering significant benefits for healthcare providers and patients worldwide.
In a statement, Manny Santana, Vice President of GE HealthCare Monitoring Solutions, emphasized the initiative’s dual focus:
“We’re not only cutting inventory and connection costs but also minimizing our ecological footprint, creating a win-win for our customers and the planet.”
The company’s Circularity and Environmentally Conscious Design program plays a pivotal role by extending the lifecycle of medical equipment.
For example, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner magnets can often be retained during upgrades, eliminating the need for new magnets and reducing emissions tied to manufacturing and transportation.
GE HealthCare’s Chief Technology Officer for Monitoring Solutions, Oliver Astley, highlighted the company’s recycling achievements during a recent webinar:
“In 2023 alone, we recovered 7,375 imaging, ultrasound, and surgery machines, resulting in over 15 million pounds of reused and recycled materials.”
These efforts align with GE HealthCare’s ambitious goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.
The company has already slashed greenhouse gas emissions by 13% in 2023, demonstrating tangible progress.
The initiative also includes sustainable packaging solutions, prioritizing recyclable materials for contrast media and other products.
Dedicated teams ensure that equipment reaching the end of its lifecycle is refurbished or recycled, diverting 90% of materials from landfills.
This circular economy approach supports hospitals in delivering high-quality care while reducing environmental impact.
