AUSTRIA – Greiner Packaging, Siegwerk and Krones have joined forces in a thought-provoking initiative that highlights the capabilities of state-of-the-art recycling facilities in the conversion of direct-printed PP and PS cups.

Utilizing hot caustic washing, a standard PET bottle recycling procedure, the initiative deinks and converts rigid containers into premium white recyclates while preserving ink formulation and print design integrity.

These containers, once deemed non-recyclable by certain ‘Design for Recycling’ guidelines, have undergone successful testing.

The hot caustic washing process is increasingly adopted by recyclers handling polyolefin and PS rigid streams, underlining the necessity for guidelines to adapt to recycling technological advancements for a more efficient and sustainable circular packaging economy.

The project partners advocate for a reevaluation of printing inks and coatings’ role in recycling, urging a comprehensive assessment of packaging deinkability under standard hot caustic conditions and the adoption of the corresponding test standard published under DIN SPEC 91496, aligning well with EuPIA’s recent position paper.
